In The Street (film)
''In the Street'' is a 16-minute documentary film released in 1948 and again in 1952. The black and white, silent film was shot in the mid-1940s in the Spanish Harlem section of New York City. Helen Levitt, Janice Loeb, and James Agee were the cinematographers; they used small, hidden 16 mm film cameras to record street life, especially of children. Levitt edited the film and, subsequent to its first release, added a piano soundtrack composed and performed by Arthur Kleiner. Production The film is generally considered as an extension of Levitt's (now famed) street photography in New York City, and Levitt subsequently re-used the title, ''In the Street'', for a volume reproducing her photographs. Arden also notes that ''In the Street'' was an influence on Stan Brakhage's and Andy Warhol's filmmaking. Loeb was a painter and photographer. Helen Levitt
Helen Levitt (August 31, 1913 – March 29, 2009) was an American photographer and cinematographer. She was particularly noted for her street photography around New York City. David Levi Strauss described her as "the most celebrated and least known photographer of her time." A retrospective exhibition of Levitt's work, ''In the Street'', is showing at The Photographers' Gallery in London from October 2021 to February 2022. Early life and education Levitt was born in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of May (Kane), and Sam Levitt. Her father and maternal grandparents were Russian Jewish immigrants. She went to New Utrecht High School but dropped out in 1931. Work in photography She began taking photography when she was eighteen and in 1931 she learned how to develop photos in the darkroom when she began working for J. Roy Arden
Roy Arden (born 1957) is a Canadian artist, born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He also creates sculpture from found objects, oil paintings, graphite drawings and collage, and curates and writes on contemporary art. Career Arden graduated from Emily Carr College of Art and Design with a bachelor degree in Photography and Interdisciplinary Studies in 1982 and with an M.A. from the University of British Columbia in 1990. In the early part of his career, Arden made straightforward Cibachrome images of the contemporary urban scene which he called "Fragments", then made what he called "meta-photography", archival image diptychs. In the 1990s, he made colour photographs of what he termed the "landscape of economy" that depicted the city of Vancouver and its rapid growth. Around 1999, Arden changed from colour to black-and-white photography, focusing again on the urban wasteland in Vancouver. In 2000, he began to produce videos.
