''In the Presence of Nothing'' is the debut studio album by American indie rock band Lilys, co-released in 1992 by Slumberland Records and SpinART. The album was written and recorded in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The album's title is a dig at Velvet Crush, who released ''In the Presence of Greatness'' the previous year. The album features Lilys frontman Kurt Heasley backed by members of Velocity Girl, the Ropers and Suddenly, Tammy!, and the band's early My Bloody Valentine influence is strongly in evidence, with Jason Ankeny of AllMusic even going as far as calling the album "the quick follow-up to ''Loveless'' that My Bloody Valentine never made", and Douglas Wolk of '' Trouser Press'' calling it "even more a product of hero-worship". Ankeny also called the album "a wonderful testament to shoegazing's brief but seminal moment in the sun." ''Trouser Press'' was a rock and roll magazine started in New York in 1974 as a mimeographed fanzine by editor/publisher Ira Robbins, fellow fan of the Who Dave Schulps and Karen Rose under the name "Trans-Oceanic Trouser Press" (a reference to a song by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and an acronymic play on the British TV show ''Top of the Pops)''. Elizabeth Sorrentino is an American pianist and singer-songwriter from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She lives in Los Angeles. Suddenly, Tammy! In the early 1990s, Sorrentino, her brother Jay (drums), and high school friend Ken Heitmueller (bass) formed the music trio Suddenly, Tammy!. The band was signed by spinART Records, which released two EPs (''Spokesmodel'', ''El Presidente''), produced by Sean Slade, and a self-titled debut album. In 1992, the band was featured on the cover of ''College Music Journal''. That same year, Sorrentino contributed backing vocals to the debut album by The Lilys. Douglas Wolk (born 1970) is a Portland, Oregon-based author and critic. He has written about comics and popular music for publications including ''The New York Times'', ''Rolling Stone'', ''The Washington Post'', ''The Nation'', ''The New Republic'', Salon.com, Pitchfork Media, ''Vanity Fair'', and '' The Believer''. Suddenly, Tammy! (sometimes uncapitalized as suddenly, tammy!) was an American indie pop band from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, United States. Notable for its guitarless, piano-centric lineup, the band released a self-titled album in 1993 on spinART Records and a second album, '' We Get There When We Do'' on Warner Bros. Records in 1995.
