Imran Maharoof
Imran Maharoof ( ta, இம்ரான் மகரூப், translit=Imrāṉ Makarūp; born 1 September 1983) is a Sri Lankan politician, former provincial councillor and Member of Parliament. Early life Maharoof was born on 1 September 1983. He is the son of former MP M. E. H. Maharoof. He is a cousin of former MP M. A. M. Maharoof (Sinna Maharoof). He was educated at Royal College, Colombo and holds a diploma in management and banking. Career Maharoof contested the 2010 parliamentary election as one of the United National Front (UNF) electoral alliance's candidates in Trincomalee District but failed to get elected after coming 2nd amongst the UNF candidates. He contested the 2012 provincial council election as one of the United National Party's candidates in Trincomalee District and was elected to the Eastern Provincial Council. Provincial council elections were held in Sri Lanka on 8 September 2012 to elect 114 members to three of the nine provincial councils in the country. 3.3 million Sri Lankans were eligible to vote in the election. Elections for the Northern Provincial Council, which had been governed directly by the national government since it was demerged from the North Eastern Provincial Council in January 2007, are overdue but the government has not set a date. Elections to the remaining five provincial councils are not due till 2014 as they had their last election in 2009. The United People's Freedom Alliance's domination of Sri Lankan elections continued as expected. 2020 Sri Lankan Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Sri Lanka on 5 August 2020 to elect 225 members to Sri Lanka's 16th Parliament. 16,263,885 people were eligible to vote in the election, 31.95% of whom were young voters. The incumbent Sri Lanka People's Freedom Alliance coalition claimed a landslide victory in the election, winning 145 seats, while Samagi Jana Balawegaya won 54 seats, Tamil National Alliance won 10 seats and National People's Power won 3 seats. The main opposition United National Party suffered the worst showing in its history following a split over party leadership, finishing in fourth place with only one seat.
