Immigration And Nationality Directorate
The Immigration and Nationality Directorate (IND) was part of the Home Office, a department of the United Kingdom government. The department had its headquarters in Croydon, South London, where it occupied thirteen buildings. The IND was responsible for inward migration to the United Kingdom, asylum applications and the recognition of refugees, nationality and citizenship and the removal and deportation of immigration offenders. The Immigration and Nationality Directorate was replaced by the Border and Immigration Agency on 1 April 2007, which was in turn subsumed into the UK Border Agency on 1 April 2008 and replaced by UK Visas and Immigration in 2013. Leave to enter is permission for entry to the United Kingdom granted by British immigration officers. According to the Immigration Rules, a person who is not a British citizen, an Irish citizen or a Commonwealth citizen with the right of abode in the UK, requires leave to enter the United Kingdom. Leave to enter grants a person subject to immigration control permission to enter Britain for a limited period only, subject to a number of conditions: #a restriction on employment or occupation in the United Kingdom; #a condition requiring the person to maintain and accommodate himself, and any dependants of his, without recourse to public funds; and #a condition requiring the person to register with the police. Dame Linda Margaret Homer, (born 4 March 1957) is a retired British civil servant who served as chief executive of HM Revenue and Customs between 2012 and 2016. Early life Homer was born in Sheringham, Norfolk, and educated in Beccles, Suffolk at Sir John Leman High School, where she served as head girl. She attended University College London, where she obtained an LLB degree. Career Homer qualified as a lawyer in 1980 whilst at Reading Borough Council. John Reid, Baron Reid of Cardowan (born 8 May 1947), is a British Labour Party politician. He was a Member of Parliament from 1987 to 2010, and served in the Cabinet under Prime Minister Tony Blair in a number of positions.
