Ilkley Open
The Ilkley Open was a grass court tennis event founded in May 1885 as the Ilkley Tournament. It was held at the Ilkley Lawn Tennis Club (f.1880), Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England through until 1981, when the it failed to find any new sponsors the tournament ended. History The Ilkley Open was first established in May 1885. The winner of first men's singles event was Mr. E.W. Fletcher who defeated Mr. A.R. Atkinson. In 1886 the first women's singles event was won by Miss. Beatrice Wood who defeated Miss Lila Moir. (for this year only it was also valid as the East Yorkshire Championships). Ilkley Lawn Tennis Club also played host for Yorkshire Lawn Tennis Association tournament called the Yorkshire Championhips four times (1888–90, 1893). From 1890 to 1968 the event went under the name of the Ilkley Open Lawn Tennis Tournament. In 1981 after a period of 95 years the final Ilkley Open was concluded. Ilkley
Ilkley is a spa town and civil parish in the City of Bradford in West Yorkshire, in Northern England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Ilkley civil parish includes the adjacent village of Ben Rhydding and is a ward within the City of Bradford. Approximately north of Bradford and north-west of Leeds, the town lies mainly on the south bank of the River Wharfe in Wharfedale, one of the Yorkshire Dales. Ilkley's spa town heritage and surrounding countryside make tourism an important local industry. The town centre is characterised by Victorian architecture, wide streets and floral displays. Gem Hoahing
Gem Cynthia Hoahing (20 October 1920 – 15 October 2015) was an English female tennis player of Chinese heritage who was active from the second half of the 1930s until the early 1960s. Early life Hoahing was born in British Hong Kong on 20 October 1920. Her father, Benjamin Hunter Hoahing, was a businessman while her mother, Singha (Susan) Ho A Shoo, became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons after the family had moved to England in the late 1920s. Her mother taught her to play tennis on the court at their house in Twickenham. When she was 12 years old she played at the West Twickenham LTC and made a trip to the French Riviera for the first time where she played in a number of handicap tournaments. Ilkley Trophy
The Ilkley Trophy, previously named as the Fuzion 100 Ilkley Trophy and the Aegon Ilkley Trophy, is a tennis tournament for male and female professional players played on grass courts. The event is classified as a €42,500 ATP Challenger Tour, ATP Challenger and a $100,000 ITF Women's Circuit event. It has been held in Ilkley, United Kingdom, since 2015. The 2020 edition of the tournament was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2021 edition was held in Nottingham instead because of the pandemic, but in 2022 both legs of the tournament are set to be held. The ITF Women's World Tennis Tour, previously known as the ITF Women's Circuit, is a series of professional tennis tournaments run by the International Tennis Federation for female professional tennis players. History It serves as a developmental circuit for the WTA Tour, which is run by the independent Women's Tennis Association (WTA). There are several hundred ITF Women's Circuit tournaments each year, spread across all six inhabited continents, with prize money ranging from US$15,000 to US$100,000. Liz Starkie
Elizabeth Starkie (born 31 August 1938) is a British former tennis player. She became Elizabeth Wagstaff after marriage. Active during the 1960s, Starkie represented Great Britain in both Federation Cup and Wightman Cup tennis. Starkie, a native of Yorkshire, competed in the Wightman Cup from 1962 to 1966 and was the doubles partner of Ann Jones in Britain's run to the semi-finals of the 1966 Federation Cup. Robin Blakelock
Robina Blakelock (born 21 February 1944) is a British former tennis player. Starting in 1963, she competed under her married name, Robin Lloyd, and was remarried in 1970 to Australian player Graham Primrose. Active in the 1960s, Blakelock grew up in Sussex. She was a British junior champion and as a 19-year old came close to beating Angela Mortimer, holding a match point against her in the 1962 Brighton final. Rita Bentley
Rita Bentley (16 July 1931 - 26 October 2016), Rita Lauder after marriage, was a British tennis player of the 1950s and 1960s. She also played field hockey and represented the England women's national team. A native of Blackpool, Bentley was a member of Great Britain's 1966 Wightman Cup team, in a squad which included Ann Haydon-Jones and Virginia Wade. Helen Jackson (tennis)
Helen Jackson was an English tennis player who played during the last decade of the 19th century. Career In 1887 she won the Darlington Open Tournament. In 1891 Jackson competed in the singles event at the Wimbledon Championships for the first time. In the first round she defeated Maud Shackle, but lost in the quarterfinals to Bertha Steedman in two sets. The following year, 1892, she lost in the first round (which was the quarterfinal) to Shackle. Her last entry came in 1895 when she reached the final of the All-comers' event after victories against J.M. Corder, Bernard and Alice Pickering. She lost the final in two close sets to Charlotte Cooper after having led both sets 5–0.
