Ihakara Puketapu
Ihakara Porutu "Kara" Puketapu is a leader of the Te Āti Awa iwi in Waiwhetū, Lower Hutt, New Zealand. . Kara was born to Īhāia Pōrutu (Paddy) Puketapu of the Te Āti Awa iwi and Taranaki-born Vera May Yeates (1904 – 16 March 1991), a Pākehā, who were both on their second marriages. Puketapu grew up in Taranaki and rose through the ranks of the Ministry of Maori Affairs (later named the ''Ministry of Māori Affairs'' and ultimately ''Te Puni Kōkiri'') to become Secretary of Maori Affairs. He is renowned for forging a new direction for the Department to empower Māori development in response to the difficulties being faced by Māori in the urban environment. Under his leadership, several Kōkiri units were established in the Wellington area. These units worked with local communities to devise programmes to support cultural and economic aspirations, thus reversing the normal 'top down' approach of government departments. Te Āti Awa
Te Āti Awa is a Māori iwi with traditional bases in the Taranaki and Wellington regions of New Zealand. Approximately 17,000 people registered their affiliation to Te Āti Awa in 2001, with around 10,000 in Taranaki, 2,000 in Wellington and around 5,000 of unspecified regional location. Geographical landmarks Te Āti Awa recognise Taranaki as their ancestral homeland. Mount Taranaki dominates the regional landscape, and many of the eight local iwi, including Te Āti Awa, regard it as sacred. The iwi also maintains a cultural association with several waterways in the region, including Wai-o-ngana, Waiwakaiho, and the Waitara River in the Taranaki region. ''Sir'' is a formal honorific address in English for men, derived from Sire in the High Middle Ages. 1995 New Zealand Rugby League Season
The 1995 New Zealand rugby league season was the 88th season of rugby league that had been played in New Zealand. The main feature of the year was the second season of the Lion Red Cup competition that was run by the New Zealand Rugby League. The North Harbour Sea Eagles won the Cup by defeating the Auckland Warriors Colts 28–21 in the Grand Final. International competitions The New Zealand national rugby league team played a two test series against France with tests being played at Ericsson Stadium in Auckland and FMG Stadium in Palmerston North. New Zealand won the first match 22-6 before drawing the second 16-all. The Kiwis then played a three match series in Australia, losing all three matches; 8-26, 10-20 and 10-46 respectively. Wainuiomata Lions
The Wainuiomata Lions are a New Zealand rugby league club based in Wainuiomata, Wellington. They compete in the Wellington Rugby League competition. In the early 1990s, prior to the creation Lion Red Cup national league competition based on provincial teams, Wainuiomata was one of the strongest rugby league teams in New Zealand. They made the final of the 1989 national club competition but went down 10–4 to Northcote. They returned to Carlaw Park the following year to beat Otahuhu 34–12 to win the 1990 title. A match was also organised against the Manly Sea-eagles team played at Fraser Park, Lower Hutt in January 1991. Manly, featuring stars such as Matthew Ridge, were the victors 20 points to 8. In 1992 Wainuiomata beat Northcote 25–18 to again win the national club championship. Waka (canoe)
Waka () are Māori watercraft, usually canoes ranging in size from small, unornamented canoes (''waka tīwai'') used for fishing and river travel to large, decorated war canoes (''waka taua'') up to long. The earliest remains of a canoe in New Zealand were found near the Anaweka estuary in a remote part of the Tasman District and radiocarbon-dated to about 1400. The canoe was constructed in New Zealand, but was a sophisticated canoe, compatible with the style of other Polynesian voyaging canoes at that time. Since the 1970s about eight large double-hulled canoes of about 20 metres have been constructed for oceanic voyaging to other parts of the Pacific.
