Idaho's At-large Congressional District
From its admittance as a state in 1890 to 1913 Idaho was represented in the United States House of Representatives by one at-large representative. After the 1910 census Idaho was awarded a second seat starting with the 63rd Congress in 1913. However both seats continued to be elected at-large on a general ticket until the election of 1918. Since that year the state has allocated two districts for its representatives. Idaho ( ) is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the Western United States. To the north, it shares a small portion of the Canada–United States border with the province of British Columbia. James Gunn (congressman)
James Gunn (March 6, 1843 – November 5, 1911) was a one-term United States House of Representatives, U. S. Congressman from the state of Idaho. Biography Born in County Fermanagh, Ireland, Gunn emigrated to the United States with his parents while he was very young. The family settled in Wisconsin where he attended the common schools. James later attended the Notre Dame Academy in Indiana and taught school briefly before the American Civil War, Civil War. In 1862, Gunn enlisted in the 27th Wisconsin Infantry and served with them for the remainder of the war. By the time he was discharged in October 1865, he was a Captain (United States), Captain. He briefly studied law, but never practiced, and, in 1866, he headed west. Thomas Ray Hamer
Thomas Ray Hamer (May 4, 1864 – December 22, 1950) was a United States Representative from Idaho. Hamer served as a single term as a Republican in the House from 1909 to 1911, representing the state at-large. Hamer attended Hedding College, and Indiana University School of Law - Bloomington (now Indiana University Maurer School of Law), and was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in St. Anthony, Idaho, in 1893. He engaged in agricultural pursuits in Fremont County, Idaho before entering politics. He was a member of the Idaho House of Representatives in 1896 and served until 1898 when he enlisted as a private in the First Regiment, Idaho Volunteer Infantry and served as captain and lieutenant colonel in the Philippine–American War. The 1906 United States House of Representatives elections were held in the middle of President Theodore Roosevelt's second term. As in many midterm elections, the President's Republican Party lost seats to the opposition Democratic Party, but retained a large overall majority. Dissatisfaction with working conditions and resentment toward union busting among industrial laborers in the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest caused these groups to turn out to the polls in large numbers in support of the Democratic Party. However, gains in these regions were not enough to remove the Republican majority or the firm support that the party held among the middle class. The 1904 United States House of Representatives elections coincided with the election to a full term of President Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt's popularity swept many Republican house candidates into office, cementing their majority over the opposition Democratic Party. Because Roosevelt came from a liberal wing of the Republican Party, his ideology was prevalent among freshman representatives. 1902 United States House Of Representatives Election In Idaho
The 1902 United States House of Representatives elections occurred in the middle of President Theodore Roosevelt's first term, about a year after the assassination of President William McKinley in September 1901. Due to the increased size of the House and the reapportionment that resulted from the 1900 U.S. Census, the Republican Party and the Democratic Party both gained seats simultaneously, which has not occurred in any elections since. The Democrats increased their share of the House, but not by enough to regain control. With a stable economy and no cornerstone issue, Democratic gains can mostly be linked to the effects of redistricting. Many of the new seats were in areas with high numbers of immigrants (mostly Eastern and Southern European industrial workers, and Northern European farmers), with new immigrants tending to vote Democrat. The 1900 United States House of Representatives elections were held, coinciding with the re-election of President William McKinley. McKinley's Republican Party gained thirteen seats from the Democratic Party and minor parties, cementing their majority.
