Icelandic Municipal Elections, 2018
Municipal elections took place in Iceland on 26 May 2018. 55 of the 72 municipal councils in the country were elected using open list PR. The rural municipality Tjörneshreppur did not hold an election as only one list was presented, whose candidates were thereby automatically elected. No list was presented in 16 municipalities. Municipal councils in those municipalities were elected using a form of plurality block voting were voters write in the names of their preferred candidates. Two of the municipal councils were for new municipalities created after mergers. Municipalities Of Iceland
The municipalities of Iceland ( is, Sveitarfélög ) are local administrative areas in Iceland that provide a number of services to their inhabitants such as kindergartens, elementary schools, waste management, social services, public housing, public transportation, services to senior citizens and disabled people. They also govern zoning and can voluntarily take on additional functions if they have the budget for it. The autonomy of municipalities over their own matters is guaranteed by the Icelandic constitution. A municipality is usually a single administrative division having corporate status and powers of self-government or jurisdiction as granted by national and regional laws to which it is subordinate. Icelandic Socialist Party
The Icelandic Socialist Party ( is, Sósíalistaflokkur Íslands; SFÍ) is a socialist political party in Iceland, which was founded on International Workers' Day (1 May) in 2017. History According to Gunnar Smári the party already had 1,400 members at its foundation. At the beginning of May, a temporary board was selected at a meeting to prepare a "Socialist Congress" in the autumn of 2017. Prior to the Congress the party selected four committees among its members by sortition, responsible for healthcare, housing, social welfare, and democratization of society. The People's Party ( is, Flokkur fólksins) is an Icelandic political party, which was founded in 2016 by Inga Sæland. The Pirate Party ( is, Píratar) is a political party in Iceland. The party's platform is based on pirate politics and direct democracy. History The Icelandic Pirate Party was founded on 24 November 2012 by Birgitta Jónsdóttir (previously a member of the Movement) and several Internet activists, including Smári McCarthy. The Centre Party ( is, Miðflokkurinn) is a Nordic agrarian and populist political party in Iceland established in September 2017. Open List
Open list describes any variant of party-list proportional representation where voters have at least some influence on the order in which a party's candidates are elected. This is as opposed to closed list, which allows only active members, party officials, or consultants to determine the order of its candidates and gives the general voter no influence at all on the position of the candidates placed on the party list. Additionally, an open list system allows voters to select individuals rather than parties. Different systems give the voter different amounts of influence to change the default ranking.
