Icelandic Footballer Of The Year
The Icelandic Footballer of the Year is an annual award chosen by a panel of officials, coaches and former players, to determine the best player in Iceland. History The inaugural winner was Guðni Kjartansson in 1973. Initially, the award could have been given to both male and female players. In 1994, Ásta B. Gunnlaugsdóttir became the first woman to win the award. In 1997, the award was split into men and women's categories. In 1989, Ólafur Þórðarson (footballer), Ólafur Þórðarson won the award whilst playing abroad, having played for Norwegian club SK Brann, Brann. Up until 2004, the award had been chosen by the Football Association of Iceland. It is now chosen by a panel of officials, coaches and former players. Birkir Kristinsson
Birkir Kristinsson (born 15 August 1964) is an Icelandic former footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Club career He started his career with local Vestmannaeyjar team ÍBV, and also played with Einherji from Vopnafjordur, KA from Akureyri, ÍA and Fram in the Icelandic league before moving to Norway with SK Brann in 1996, where he is still considered as a hero, after his efforts in the cup winner's cup in 1997, where SK Brann reached the quarter finals. He moved to English club Birmingham City and after failing to make an impression there, he moved on to spells with Swedish side IFK Norrköping, Bolton Wanderers and Austrian club Lustenau before making a return to ÍBV. The Breiðablik women's football team is the women's football department of the Breiðablik UBK multi-sport club. It is based in Kópavogur, Iceland, and currently plays in the Úrvalsdeild kvenna, the top-tier women's football league in Iceland. They finished second in the league in 2017 and first in 2018. They won the Úrvalsdeild kvenna in 2020 and are currently competing in the 2021–22 UEFA Women's Champions League. Arnar Bergmann Gunnlaugsson (born 6 March 1973) is an Icelandic football coach managing Víkingur in the Úrvalsdeild. He is a retired international player. During his career he enjoyed spells at Leicester City, Stoke City, Bolton Wanderers, IA Akranes, 1. FC Nürnberg, Feyenoord and Dundee United. Eyjólfur Gjafar Sverrisson (born 3 August 1968) is an Icelandic former footballer and former coach of the Iceland national football team. He is the father of Hólmar Örn Eyjólfsson, also a professional footballer. Football Playing career Club career Eyjólfur started his career as a striker at local team UMF Tindastóll and moved to VfB Stuttgart in 1989. He played for Stuttgart until 1994 and became a German champion in 1992. After five seasons, he moved to play in midfield for Beşiktaş J.K. in Turkey and became Turkish champion with the team in 1995. Guðmundur "Gunni" Torfason (born 13 December 1961, in Vestmannaeyjar) is an Icelandic former footballer and manager. Playing career Club A striker, he became top goalscorer in the Icelandic league in 1986 with 19 goals when he was also named the Player of the Year. He moved to continental Europe with Belgian sides Beveren and Winterslag who later merged with Waterschei to become Racing Genk. Guðmundur became the first ever goalscorer of the new club when he scored against KV Mechelen. He then had a spell with Austrians Rapid Vienna, before joining St Mirren in 1989. He became club top scorer three seasons in a row. In 1992 Guðmundur left St Mirren for St Johnstone. In 1995, he moved for a brief spell at Doncaster Rovers.
