''I Was an Adventuress'' (French: ''J'étais une aventurière'') is a 1938 French comedy drama film directed by Raymond Bernard and starring Edwige Feuillère, Jean Murat and Jean-Max. It was remade in 1940 as an American film of the same title. It was part of a growing trend of English-language remakes of major French films.Crisp p.326 The film's sets were designed by the art directors Léon Barsacq and Jean Perrier. Raymond Bernard
Raymond Bernard (10 October 1891 – 12 December 1977) was a French film director and screenwriter whose career spanned more than 40 years. He is best remembered for several large-scale historical productions, including the silent films '' Le Miracle des loups'' (''The Miracle of the Wolves'') and '' Le Joueur d'échecs'' (''The Chess Player'') and in the 1930s '' Les Croix de bois'' (''Wooden Crosses'') and a highly regarded adaptation of ''Les Misérables''. Biography Raymond Bernard was born in Paris in 1891, the son of the author and humorist Tristan Bernard and younger brother of the playwright Jean-Jacques Bernard. He began his career as an actor appearing on stage in plays written by his father, including ''Jeanne Doré'' (1913) alongside Sarah Bernhardt (also filmed in 1916). ''I Was an Adventuress'' is a 1940 American drama film directed by Gregory Ratoff, starring Vera Zorina, Richard Greene, Erich von Stroheim, and Peter Lorre. Actress/ballerina Countess Tanya Vronsky (Vera Zorina) works as decoy for two international con artists Andre Desormeaux ( Erich von Stroheim) and Polo (Peter Lorre). Plot Countess Tanya Vronsky acts as bait for notorious jewel thief Andre Desormeaux and his assistant, Polo, on their tour through Europe. Everything goes according to plan until Tanya falls in love with their next target, Paul Vernay. Still, the gang manages to victimize Paul.
