I Love A Mystery (film)
''I Love a Mystery'' is a 1945 American mystery film directed by Henry Levin and starring Jim Bannon, Nina Foch, George Macready, and Barton Yarborough. Based on Carlton E. Morse's popular radio serial of the same name, ''I Love a Mystery'' was the first of three Columbia "B" pictures inspired by the radio series and the only one actually based on a script written by Morse for the radio series. ''The Devil's Mask'' and '' The Unknown'' followed in 1946. Plot Two private detectives, Jim Packard (Jim Bannon) and Doc Long (Barton Yarborough), make the uneasy acquaintance of Jefferson Monk (George Macready) at a nightclub. When a flaming dessert is nearly spilled onto the trio, Monk reveals it was meant for him. He explains that, according to a prophecy, he is to die in three days. Henry Levin (film Director)
Henry Levin (5 June 1909 – 1 May 1980) began as a stage actor and director but was most notable as an American film director of over fifty feature films. His best known credits were '' Jolson Sings Again'' (1949), ''Journey to the Center of the Earth'' (1959) and ''Where the Boys Are'' (1960). Biography Acting Levin began as an actor. He was on Broadway in ''Somewhere in France'' (1941) and appeared in summer stock in ''Cuckoos on the Hearth'' (1941). He worked for Brock Pemberton stage productions. Columbia Pictures Dialogue Director In May 1943 Levin signed a contract to work at Columbia Pictures. He was one of three stage director recruited by the studio – the others were William Castle and Leslie Urbach. Levin's job was to work with the younger Columbia actors. ''The Devil's Mask'' is a 1946 American crime film directed by Henry Levin and starring Anita Louise, Jim Bannon and Michael Duane. The film was the second of three B pictures based on the popular radio series '' I Love a Mystery''. As well as its crime theme, the film also incorporates elements of horror. Synopsis Two private detectives are asked to go to a museum to meet a woman who claims she is about to be murdered by her stepdaughter. The case becomes linked to a plane crash, a shrunken head just sent to the museum, and a scientist who disappeared during an expedition to South America. Arthur Lester Matthews (6 June 1900 – 5 June 1975) was an English actor. In his career, the handsome Englishman made more than 180 appearances in film and on television. He was erroneously credited in later years as Les Matthews. Matthews played supporting roles in films like ''The Raven'' and '' Werewolf of London'' (both 1935), but his career deteriorated into bit parts. He died on 5 June 1975, the day before his 75th birthday, in Los Angeles. His ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean. Carole Mathews (born Jean Deifel, also credited as Jeanne Francis; September 13, 1920 – November 6, 2014) was an American film and television actress. Early years Born in Montgomery, Illinois, near Chicago, Mathews lived with her grandmother after her parents divorced. She attended elementary schools in Aurora, Illinois, and obtained her secondary education at Calumet High School in Chicago. After graduation from high school, she entered a nunnery in Milwaukee. Her grandmother made her leave it, however, telling her to wait until she was 21. In 1938, Matthews was named "Miss Chicago" and, in doing so, qualified for a trip to California and a screen test. While in California, she auditioned for the Earl Carroll Follies and won a role in the show for 1939. ''The Unknown'' is a 1946 American mystery film directed by Henry Levin made by Columbia Pictures as the third and final part of its '' I Love a Mystery'' series based on the popular radio program. The previous films were '' I Love a Mystery'' (1945) and '' The Devil's Mask'' (1946). William Barton Yarborough (October 2, 1900 – December 19, 1951) was an American actor who worked extensively in radio drama, primarily on the NBC Radio Network.
