It was first recorded by Jerry Butler in 1964 and released as a single by him (under the title "I Don't Want to Hear Anymore"). Writer Kevin Courrier, in his 2005 book ''Randy Newman's American Dreams'', describes the song as about the "ambiguities of romance" with the singer the protagonist in an "ill-fated love affair". Dusty Springfield version In April 1969 "I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore" was announced as the third A-side release from Dusty Springfield's album ''Dusty in Memphis'' with "The Windmills of Your Mind" as the B-side. The producer of ''Dusty in Memphis'', Jerry Wexler, was prepared to promote "The Windmills of Your Mind" as the A-side if it won the Academy Award for Best Song, which it duly did. It was subsequently issued as a double-sided promo single. String arranger Arif Mardin described the background vocalists on the song as resembling a Greek chorus in their interactions with Springfiel ... Melissa
Melissa is a female given name. The name comes from the Greek word μέλισσα (''mélissa''), "bee", which in turn comes from μέλι (''meli''), "honey". In Hittite, ''melit'' signifies "honey". ''Melissa'' also refers to the plant ''Melissa officinalis'' (family Lamiaceae), known as lemon balm. Melissa is a common variant form, with others being Malissa, Melesa, Melessa, Meliza, Mellisa, Melosa, and Molissa. In Ireland it is sometimes used as a feminine form of the Gaelic male name ''Maoilíosa'', which means "servant of Jesus", which is of an origin independent of the Hittites. According to Greek mythology, perhaps reflecting Minoan culture, making her the daughter of a Cretan king Melisseus, whose ''-issos'' ending is Pre-Greek, Melissa was a nymph who discovered and taught the use of honey and from whom bees were believed to have received their name. She was one of the nymph nurses of Zeus, sister to Amaltheia, but rather than feeding the baby milk, Melissa, appr ... Greek Chorus
A Greek chorus, or simply chorus ( grc-gre, χορός, chorós), in the context of ancient Greek tragedy, comedy, satyr plays, and modern works inspired by them, is a homogeneous, non-individualised group of performers, who comment with a collective voice on the dramatic action. The chorus consisted of between 12 and 50 players, who variously danced, sang or spoke their lines in unison, and sometimes wore masks. Etymology Historian H. D. F. Kitto argues that the term ''chorus'' gives us hints about its function in the plays of ancient Greece: "The Greek verb ''choreuo'', 'I am a member of the chorus', has the sense 'I am dancing'. The word ''ode'' means not something recited or declaimed, but 'a song'. The 'orchestra', in which a chorus had its being, is literally a 'dancing floor'." From this, it can be inferred that the chorus danced and sang poetry. Dramatic function Plays of the ancient Greek theatre always included a chorus that offered a variety of background and summary ...
