Cole Porter
Cole Albert Porter (June 9, 1891 – October 15, 1964) was an American composer and songwriter. Many of his songs became standards noted for their witty, urbane lyrics, and many of his scores found success on Broadway and in film. Born to a wealthy family in Indiana, Porter defied his grandfather's wishes for him to practice law and took up music as a profession. Classically trained, he was drawn to musical theatre. After a slow start, he began to achieve success in the 1920s, and by the 1930s he was one of the major songwriters for the Broadway musical stage. Unlike many successful Broadway composers, Porter wrote the lyrics as well as the music for his songs. After a serious horseback riding accident in 1937, Porter was left disabled and in constant pain, but he continued to work. His shows of the early 1940s did not contain the lasting hits of his best work of the 1920s and 1930s, but in 1948 he made a triumphant comeback with his most successful musical, ''Kiss Me, Kate ...

Back To Balboa
''Back to Balboa'' is an album by bandleader and pianist Stan Kenton featuring performances recorded at the Rendezvous Ballroom in 1958 and released on the Capitol label.Vosbein, PStan Kenton Discographyaccessed April 16, 2016 The liner notes for the original LP release stated: "It was late in 1957 that the Rendezvous became home base for the Kenton orchestra. Balboa offered the stimulating surroundings; the Rendezvous offered a location spot between tours and incomparable acoustical properties." "The body of sound, and the crystal clear overtones achieved in this album, is attributed to the orchestra's blowing over a block-long polished dance floor and reverberating from the great arched wooden ceiling. The effect, without the use of echo chambers or electronic magic, is one which seemingly places the listener within the walls of the pastel hall."Liner notes to Capitol LP album T995 Reception Down Beat critic Don Gold wrote in his July 10, 1958 review that "Kenton, in describ ...

Thank You For Everything (Johnny Hartman Album)
''Thank You for Everything'' is a studio album by American jazz vocalist Johnny Hartman, released in 1998 by Audiophile Records. The material was originally recorded in mid-1976 for two episodes of Alec Wilder's National Public Radio series entitled ''American Popular Song''. Each episode focused on one composer, and Hartman chose works by Billy Strayhorn (originally broadcast November 7, 1976) and Cole Porter (originally broadcast March 13, 1977). Most of the songs from the two episodes are included on ''Thank You for Everything'' and marked the first time they had been commercially released. Reception Scott Yanow at AllMusic gave the album four out of five stars. "Fifty-five at the time, Hartman was still in prime form, as he shows throughout the lengthy set of ballads. . . . ghlights include 'I'm Glad There Is You,' ' Easy To Love,' two versions of 'Warm Valley' and a remake of ' Lush Life.'" Grant Green
Grant Green (June 6, 1935 – January 31, 1979) was an American jazz guitarist and composer. Recording prolifically for Blue Note Records as both leader and sideman, Green performed in the hard bop, soul jazz, bebop, and Latin-tinged idioms throughout his career. Critics Michael Erlewine and Ron Wynn write, "A severely underrated player during his lifetime, Grant Green is one of the great unsung heroes of jazz guitar ... Green's playing is immediately recognizable – perhaps more than any other guitarist." Critic Dave Hunter described his sound as "lithe, loose, slightly bluesy and righteously groovy". He often performed in an organ trio, a small group featuring a Hammond organ and drummer. Apart from fellow guitarist Charlie Christian, Green's primary influences were saxophonists, particularly Charlie Parker, and his approach was therefore almost exclusively linear rather than chordal. He thus rarely played rhythm guitar except as a sideman on albums led by other musicia ...
