I Am One
"I Am One" is the debut single by American alternative rock band the Smashing Pumpkins. It was the band's first ever release and remains the only single issued by the band with co-writing credits to both Billy Corgan and James Iha. It charted on the UK Singles Chart at a peak position of number 73. Two recordings of the song were released. One was recorded in 1990 and was the Pumpkins' first release and first on Limited Potential. This recording was financed with the money from Corgan's college tuition fund left by his grandmother. "I Am One" was re-recorded for ''Gish'' and a new single was released on Caroline Records and Hut Recordings. Corgan later stated his regret with not re-working the song for ''Gish'', as the two versions are nearly identical. A video for the song was also filmed, but never released (until 2001) due to the band being unhappy with the result. Footage from the video was instead used on the long form video, ''Vieuphoria'', the long version of the music v ...

The Smashing Pumpkins
The Smashing Pumpkins (also referred to as simply Smashing Pumpkins) are an American alternative rock band from Chicago. Formed in 1988 by frontman and guitarist Billy Corgan, bassist D'arcy Wretzky, guitarist James Iha and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, the band has undergone several line-up changes since their reunion in 2006, with Corgan being the sole constant member since its inception. The current lineup features Corgan, Chamberlin, Iha and guitarist Jeff Schroeder. Disavowing the punk rock roots of many of their contemporaries, they have a diverse, densely-layered sound, containing elements of gothic rock, heavy metal, dream pop, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, shoegaze, and electronica in later recordings. Corgan is the group's primary composer; his musical versatility and cathartic lyrics have shaped the band's distinctive albums, which one writer described as "anguished, bruised reports from Billy Corgan's nightmare-land". With 30 million albums sold worldwide ...

Thirty-Three (song)
"Thirty-Three" is a song by American alternative rock band the Smashing Pumpkins. It was the fifth and final single from their third album, ''Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness'' (1995), in November 1996. It was the first single released after the firing of Jimmy Chamberlin and death of Jonathan Melvoin. The song peaked at 39 on the US ''Billboard'' Hot 100, becoming the band's fourth and final top-40 hit there, number seven in New Zealand and the top 30 in Canada and the United Kingdom. In Canada, it coincidentally finished at number 33 on the ''RPM'' Alternative 30 year-end chart for 1997. Background The song was described by Billy Corgan as "a simple song in a country tuning", and was the first song that he wrote after the ''Siamese Dream'' tour. The guitars in the song are tuned to EGBGBE half a step down, and the drum machine track is exactly the same track Corgan recorded when he laid down the demo version of the song, because he was unable to recreate it. In a tapi ...

Rocket (The Smashing Pumpkins Song)
"Rocket" is a song by American alternative rock band the Smashing Pumpkins. It was the fourth and final single from their second album, ''Siamese Dream'', and was written by Billy Corgan. The song charted in Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, as well as on the US ''Billboard'' Album Rock Tracks chart. It was one of the few singles that did not appear on the Smashing Pumpkins' greatest hits album ''Rotten Apples''. Background Corgan once commented, Composition "Rocket" is a rock song. Being more melodic than ''Siamese Dream'' single "Cherub Rock" and the band's ''Gish''-era work in the vein of the track, it was described as a "standard Pumpkins fuzzed-out heavy blissness." The song also features a repetitive guitar line pulsing through, creating a wall of sound effect. Release and reception A 7" vinyl record was released in the United Kingdom as part of the ''Siamese Singles'' box set, and on its own. Its B-side (not taken from the album) was a cover version of the De ...

Rotten Apples
''Rotten Apples'' (''The Smashing Pumpkins – Greatest Hits'' as titled on the album's cover) is a greatest hits compilation album by alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins. In the US, it was released on November 20, 2001, along with a bonus disc titled ''Judas O''. The album's concluding track, "Untitled", was the Pumpkins' final recording before their breakup. Completed in the days leading up to the band's farewell concert at the Metro in Chicago, it was also released as a single. Another notable track is "Real Love"; while previously released on ''Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music'', this was taken from the factory master tapes and, as a result, lacks the pops and clicks inherent in all copies of ''Machina II'' (which is vinyl sourced). The title of the album is the namesake of a B-side that was released on the " Tonight, Tonight" single. Peaking at number 31 in the US, the album sold 77,000 units in its first week of being released. Release and recepti ...

Earphoria
''Earphoria'' is a live album by American alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins. It is the soundtrack of the band's '' Vieuphoria'' video. While the video has been widely available since its initial release, the CD was initially released as a limited number (under 1000) of promo copies in 1994, and was subsequently heavily bootlegged.Dahlen, Chris. Smashing Pumpkins: Earphoria: Pitchfork Record Review". 2002–12–12. Accessed on 2007–12–30. In 2002, ''Vieuphoria'' was reissued on DVD and ''Earphoria'' finally earned a commercial release. The CD contains the audio for all the performances in ''Vieuphoria'', and includes extended versions of the music used in the video interludes. An exception is the performance of "Silverfuck" – ''Earphoria'' includes the tease of " Over the Rainbow" while ''Vieuphoria'' edits it out, possibly owing to prohibitive licensing costs. Critical reception "While a live document of the Pumpkins' farewell tour would have been very palatabl ...

Zero (The Smashing Pumpkins Song)

"Zero" was written by Billy Corgan and was the first song recorded for ''Mellon Collie''. The song has six rhythm guitars, with two line-in twelve string acoustics. Commercially, "Zero" reached number one in Spain and number three in New Zealand. In North America, the song reached number one on Canada's ''RPM'' Alternative 30, number 15 on the US Mainstream Rock chart, and number nine on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart. In the United States, the song was released as an extended play (EP) and charted on the ''Billboard'' 200 instead of the Hot 100 due to the EP containing more than four songs, which was ''Billboard''s limit for single releases. The EP reached number 46 on the ''Billboard'' 200. Th ...

Bass Guitar
The bass guitar, electric bass or simply bass (), is the lowest-pitched member of the string family. It is a plucked string instrument similar in appearance and construction to an electric or an acoustic guitar, but with a longer neck and scale length, and typically four to six strings or courses. Since the mid-1950s, the bass guitar has largely replaced the double bass in popular music. The four-string bass is usually tuned the same as the double bass, which corresponds to pitches one octave lower than the four lowest-pitched strings of a guitar (typically E, A, D, and G). It is played primarily with the fingers or thumb, or with a pick. To be heard at normal performance volumes, electric basses require external amplification. Terminology According to the ''New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians'', an "Electric bass guitar sa Guitar, usually with four heavy strings tuned E1'–A1'–D2–G2." It also defines ''bass'' as "Bass (iv). A contraction of Double bas ...

Tarantula (The Smashing Pumpkins Song)
"Tarantula" is a song by The Smashing Pumpkins. It is the first single from their seventh album, ''Zeitgeist'', and their first release since their 2006 reunion. Release and structure Billy Corgan mentioned during a concert of June 5 in Berlin that "Tarantula" was titled in honor of the German rock band Scorpions, with whom Corgan had recently collaborated on the Scorpions song "The Cross". The intro and the outro of the song are inspired by the song "Dark Lady" of Scorpions, while Corgan stated that he wrote the solo of the song thinking how Uli Jon Roth could have played it. Corgan and Chamberlin believe the song is a culmination of music they've been listening to all their lives, specifically the Scorpions and UFO. A 30-second clip of the song was released on May 14, 2007. On May 21, 2007, the single was released on iTunes for the United States, followed by the United Kingdom and Canada on May 22. On this date, "Tarantula" was played for the first time live in Paris at th ...
