I.O.O.F. Hall (Challis, Idaho)
The I.O.O.F. Hall is an Independent Order of Odd Fellows building located on Main Avenue in Challis, Idaho. The building was constructed in two sections; the first was built prior to 1894, while the second was added in 1896. The front facade features two raised gables with decorative Queen Anne woodwork; both gables were connected by a larger gable in 1930. The Odd Fellows were a significant social group in Challis' early history, as almost all of the town's founders were members of the organization. The hall was used for nearly every large community event in Challis during the early 1900s, including dances, public exhibitions, and even the meetings of other fraternal organizations. Challis, Idaho
Challis is the largest city in Custer County, Idaho, United States. It is the county seat and its population was 1,081 at the 2010 census. The 2020 census shows 902 residents, a 16.6% drop. History Challis was founded in 1878 and named for A.P. Challis, who was a surveyor when the townsite was laid out. Challis post office was established in 1878. Twin Peaks Sports, the I.O.O.F. Hall, and a number of other buildings in Challis are individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places, most as a result of an Idaho State Historical Society study of historical resources in the town. It was founded in 1819 by Thomas Wildey in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. Queen Anne style architecture was one of a number of popular Victorian architectural styles that emerged in the United States during the period from roughly 1880 to 1910. Popular there during this time, it followed the Second Empire and Stick styles and preceded the Richardsonian Romanesque and Shingle styles. Sub-movements of Queen Anne include the Eastlake movement. The style bears almost no relationship to the original Queen Anne style architecture in Britain (a toned-down version of English Baroque that was used mostly for gentry houses) which appeared during the time of Queen Anne, who reigned from 1702 to 1714, nor of Queen Anne Revival (which appeared in the latter 19th century there).
