''Häxan'' (, "The Witch"; Danish: ''Heksen''; English: ''The Witches''; released in the US in 1968 as ''Witchcraft Through the Ages'') is a 1922 silent horror essay film written and directed by Benjamin Christensen. Consisting partly of documentary-style storytelling as well as dramatized narrative sequences, the film charts the historical roots and superstitions surrounding witchcraft, beginning in the Middle Ages through the 20th century. Based partly on Christensen's own study of the ''Malleus Maleficarum'', a 15th-century German guide for inquisitors, ''Häxan'' proposes that such witch hunts may have stemmed from misunderstandings of mental or neurological disorders, triggering mass hysteria. ''Häxan'' is a Swedish film produced by AB Svensk Filmindustri, but shot in Denmark in 1920–1921. Benjamin Christensen
Benjamin Christensen (28 September 1879 – 2 April 1959) was a Danish film director, screenwriter and an actor, both in film and on the stage. As a director, he is best known for the 1922 film ''Häxan'' (aka ''Witchcraft Through the Ages''). His most memorable acting performance was in the film ''Michael'' (1924), where he played Claude Zoret, the male lover of the film's title character in a landmark gay film. Biography Benjamin Christensen was born in Viborg as the youngest of twelve children. He initially studied medicine but got interested in acting and began studies at the Det Kongelige Teater (Royal Danish Theatre) in Copenhagen in 1901. Christensen's professional acting career began in Aarhus in 1907, but he did not act for long. He soon abandoned the stage in order to become a wine salesman. Edla Hansen
Edla Hansen was a Danish film editor active from the 1920s through the 1950s. One of the best-known films she edited was 1922's ''Häxan''. Biography Hansen grew up in Copenhagen and began working as a film cutter at Nordisk Film in 1915. She later spent time at A/S Palladium and Valby. She was married to Holger Christian Hansen. Johan Ankerstjerne
Johan Valdemar Ankerstjerne (17 January 1886 – 18 August 1959) was a Danish cinematographer who for many years was head of cinematography at Nordisk Film. He was reportedly the best cameraman in Denmark in the 1910s, making many films for August Blom from 1911 until 1916 and then for Benjamin Christensen. He created the unique "images of Haxan". In 1932 he founded Denmark's first film laboratory, Johan Ankerstjerne A/S which, after merging with Nordisk Film Teknik, became the largest production facility in the country. Career Ankerstjerne first became a watchmaker in Randers. In 1907, he also became an operator in the town's first cinema. It was not long before he decided to make films himself, starting with short documentaries.
