Hyphenated-man
''Hyphenated-man'' (stylized in all lowercase) is the fourth solo album by Mike Watt, and the first full-length recording he made under his own name since parting with Columbia Records in 2005. Initially released in Japan bParabolica Recordsin October 2010, the album was released in the rest of the world on clenchedwrench, an independent record label newly founded by Watt. He is accompanied on the album by his Mike Watt + The Missingmen bandmates, guitarist Tom Watson and drummer Raul Morales. Writing and recording The album is a loose concept album (Watt refers to it as his third "punk opera") of thirty short songs, all two minutes or under (most average about a minute and a half) inspired by creatures from the paintings of Hieronymous Bosch; each of the thirty song titles is derived from a nickname Watt came up with for each creature, "since I don't know three-hundred-year-old Dutch". Watt co-founded and played bass guitar for the rock bands Minutemen (1980–1985), Dos (1985–present), and Firehose (1986–1994). He began a solo career with the 1994 album ''Ball-Hog or Tugboat?'', he has since released three additional solo albums, most recently in 2010 with ''Hyphenated-man''. He is also the frontman for the supergroup Big Walnuts Yonder (2008–present), a member of the art rock group Banyan (1997–present) and is involved with several other musical projects. The Secondman's Middle Stand
''The Secondman's Middle Stand'' was Mike Watt's third solo album and the first full-length recording that he had made under his own name since the release of ''Contemplating The Engine Room'' in 1997. The storyline for the nine-track album parallel's Watt's real-life January 2000 bout with a near-fatal infection in his perineum with one of his favorite pieces of literature, Dante's ''The Divine Comedy''. The first three tracks of the album represent the ''Inferno'' (Watt's illness up until the time the abscess burst); the second three songs represent the ''Purgatorio'' (Watt's surgery and subsequent recovery), and the final three represent the ''Paradisio'' (Watt's resuming his everyday life and career). The Minutemen (band)
Minutemen were an American punk rock band formed in San Pedro, California, in 1980. Composed of guitarist/vocalist D. Boon, bassist/vocalist Mike Watt, and drummer George Hurley, Minutemen recorded four albums and eight EPs before Boon's death in an automobile accident in 1985; the band broke up shortly thereafter. They were noted in the California punk community for a philosophy of "jamming econo"—a sense of thriftiness reflected in their touring and short, tight songs as well as their eclectic style drawing on hardcore punk, funk, jazz, and other sources. The Missingmen are a punk rock trio fronted by Minutemen/ Firehose/ Stooges bassist Mike Watt. The band features Watt, guitarist Tom Watson ( Slovenly, The Pair Of Pliers, The Jom And Terry Show, Red Krayola), and drummer Raul Morales ( FYP, Killer Dreamer, The Leeches, Mike Watt and the Secondmen). The band's name is a humorous reference to the fact that during a 2005 European tour behind Watt's album ''The Secondman's Middle Stand'', neither of the original Secondmen ( Pete Mazich and Jerry Trebotic) were able to participate. Tom Watson (born 1962) is an American musician known for playing guitar with Slovenly, Red Krayola, and Mike Watt + The Missingmen Career Born in 1962 in New York City, Watson's father was an illustrator and his mother was a theater actor. After first grade, Watson's family moved to Manhattan Beach, California. While attending Mira Costa High School, he met Steve Anderson, Scott Ziegler and drummer Bruce Losson who were in a band called the Convalescents. When the bass player left, Watson joined and the band name was changed to Toxic Shock. The band played their first gig as Toxic Shock with Minutemen and Saccharine Trust which led to an invitation from the Urinals to contribute a track to the ''Keats Rides A Harley'' compilation album by Happy Squid Records. ''Contemplating the Engine Room'' is a punk rock opera by Minutemen veteran Mike Watt. Released in 1997, the album is a punk rock song cycle that uses navy life as an extended metaphor for both Watt's family history and his first band, the Minutemen. The album was critically well-received, though not universally. The cover art features a picture of Watt's father in his Navy uniform. Background In July 1997, Watt posted on his personal website, "I'm gonna call the band mike watt and the black gang crew in honor of engine room folk - the ''black gang'' is boat talk for engine room crew." Tony Maimone (born September 27, 1952) is a bassist, producer, and recording engineer, who lives in Brooklyn, New York. He was a member of Pere Ubu from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s, often playing with drummer Scott Krauss. The duo were dubbed by a critic "one of the great unheralded rhythm sections in all of rock". He is known as one of the former members of They Might Be Giants from 1992 until 1996. Maimone also has worked with Bob Mould, Frank Black, The Mekons, They Might Be Giants, and Jon Langford.
