Hyde Park, Sheffield
Hyde Park is a district in Sheffield, England. The area is named after fields that occupied the area in the early 19th century which were used by Sheffield Cricket Club as a home venue from 1824 to 1856. Cricket venue The area was used for important matches between 1824 and 1856 as a home venue of Sheffield Cricket Club. The fields provided enough space for up to 10 cricket matches at a time. It was the site of the first "Roses Match" between Yorkshire and Lancashire on 23–25 July 1849.Haygarth, S&B volume 4, p. 55. Urban renewal Hyde Park was the site of the earliest large scale slum clearance in Britain, the previous back-to-back housing having been known as "Little Chicago" in the 1930s, due to the violent crimes sometimes committed there. The City of Sheffield is a city and metropolitan borough in South Yorkshire, England. The metropolitan borough includes the administrative centre of Sheffield, the town of Stocksbridge and larger village of Chapeltown and part of the Peak District. It has a population of 584,853 (mid-2019 est), making it technically the third largest city in England by population behind Birmingham and Leeds, since London is not considered a single entity. Arts Tower
The Arts Tower is a building at 12 Bolsover Street in Sheffield, England belonging to the University of Sheffield and opened in 1966. A spokesperson for English Heritage described it as "the most elegant university tower block in Britain of its period". At 255 feet (78 m) tall, it is the second tallest building in the city, after the 331 feet (101 m) St Paul's Tower on Arundel Gate, which was topped out in 2009. Golden Lane Estate
The Golden Lane Estate is a 1950s council housing complex in the City of London. It was built on the northern edge of the City, on a site devastated by bombing during the Second World War. Since 1997, the estate has been protected as a group of listed buildings of special architectural interest. Origins The estate provides residential accommodation to the north of Cripplegate, following destruction by Nazi bombing of much of the City of London during the Blitz of the Second World War. Only around 500 residents remained in the City in 1950, a mere 50 of whom lived in the Cripplegate area.
