Comet Hyakutake
Comet Hyakutake (, formally designated C/1996 B2) is a comet, discovered on 31 January 1996, that passed very close to Earth in March of that year. It was dubbed the Great Comet of 1996; its passage near the Earth was one of the closest cometary approaches of the previous 200 years. Hyakutake appeared very bright in the night sky and was widely seen around the world. The comet temporarily upstaged the much anticipated Comet Hale–Bopp, which was approaching the inner Solar System at the time. Scientific observations of the comet led to several discoveries. Most surprising to cometary scientists was the first discovery of X-ray emission from a comet, believed to have been caused by ionised solar wind particles interacting with neutral atoms in the coma of the comet. The ''Ulysses'' spacecraft unexpectedly crossed the comet's tail at a distance of more than from the nucleus, showing that Hyakutake had the longest tail known for a comet. Gengo Hyakutake
was a career officer and admiral in the Imperial Japanese Navy. Biography Born to a low-ranking samurai of Saga Domain, Hyakutake's elder brother Saburō Hyakutake was an admiral in the Imperial Japanese Navy, and his younger brother Harukichi Hyakutake was a general in the Imperial Japanese Army. Initially destined for a career in agriculture, he instead decided to follow his elder brother Kōji's desire for a naval career after Kōji's premature death due to illness. Hyakutake graduated in the 30th class of the Imperial Japanese Naval Academy in 1902 and was appointed an ensign the following year. He served on and during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905, and was on ''Mikasa'' during the Battle of the Yellow Sea. Afterwards, he transferred to the , followed by the battleship , on which he participated in the Battle of Tsushima. He was promoted to sub-lieutenant in December 1905. Harukichi Hyakutake
was a general in the Japanese Imperial Army in World War II. He is sometimes referred to as Haruyoshi Hyakutake or Seikichi Hyakutake. His elder brothers Saburō Hyakutake and Gengo Hyakutake were admirals in the Imperial Japanese Navy. Biography Early career Born in Saga prefecture, Hyakutake graduated as an infantry officer from the 21st class of the Imperial Japanese Army Academy in 1909. Noted generals Kanji Ishiwara and Jo Iimura were among his classmates, as was future Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek. He attended the 33rd class of the Army Staff College in 1921, where he studied cryptanalysis, and was assigned to the Imperial Japanese Army General Staff after graduation. From 1925 to 1927, as a lieutenant colonel, Hyakutake served as the Japanese Resident Officer in Poland. In 1928 he was assigned to the Headquarters of the Kwantung Army in China. Saburō Hyakutake ( ja, 百武三郎) (June 3, 1872 – October 30, 1963) was an Imperial Japanese Navy admiral. Biography Hyakutake was born in Saga Prefecture. Tetsugo Hyakutake
is a Japanese artist and photographer. His work has been exhibited in Tokyo, Philadelphia, New York, Madrid, and Venice. Biography Hyakutake graduated from the University of the Arts in 2006 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography, receiving the Promising Artist Award and Society for Photographic Education Mid-Atlantic Region Scholarship Award. In 2009, Hyakutake obtained a master's degree of Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was awarded a Toby Devan Lewis Fellowship. In 2009 he was a winner of the International Photography Awards Competition for his project Post-Industrialization. Hyakutake’s work is fueled by historical, economic, and social issues of post-war Japan connected to his own personal experiences and the voices of his generation.
