Hyacinth Stakes
The Hyacinth Stakes is an international listed flat horse race in Japan open to three-year-old horses. It is run at Tokyo Racecourse over a distance of 1600 metres. The race was first run in 2003 and is the most important early race in Japan for three year olds on dirt. In 2017, the race began to be included as part of the Road to the Kentucky Derby series. Tokyo Racecourse
is located in Fuchu, Tokyo, Japan. Built in 1933 for horse racing, it is considered the "racecourse of racecourses" in Japanese horseracing. It has a capacity of 223,000, with seating for 13,750. Tokyo Racecourse hosts numerous G1 (Grade 1) races, including the Japan Cup, Tokyo Yushun (the Japanese Derby) and the Yasuda Kinen, a part of the Asian Mile Challenge. Physical attributes Tokyo Race Course's grass course measures 2083m (1¼ miles + 234 feet) with two chutes (1800m and 2000m). Road To The Kentucky Derby
The Road to the Kentucky Derby is a points system by which horses qualify for a position in the starting gate for the Kentucky Derby. It features dozens of stakes races for 2 and 3-year-old Thoroughbreds – the number and specific races have changed slightly over the years. The point system replaced a previous qualifying system that looked at earnings from all graded stakes races worldwide. There are 20 positions available in the starting gate for the Kentucky Derby. Starting in 2017, one of those spots is reserved for the winner of the separate Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby. If the winner of the Japan Road declines the offer, their position is offered to the next ranked Japanese horse. Cafe Pharoah ( ja, カフェファラオ, link=no foaled 3 March 2017) is an American-bred, Japanese-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 2019, he established himself as a top-class dirt performer in the following year, winning the Hyacinth Stakes, Unicorn Stakes and Sirius Stakes. In 2021 he won the February Stakes. Background Cafe Pharoah is a bay colt with a small white star bred in Kentucky by Paul P Pompa. In March 2019, after failing to find a buyer at Keeneland as a yearling, he was consigned to the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training and was bought for $475,000 by the bloodstock agency Narvick International.
