Hutt Park Railway
The Hutt Park Railway was a private railway in Petone at the southern end of the Hutt Valley in New Zealand's North Island. It operated from 1885 as a branch from the Hutt Valley section of the Wairarapa Line, from 1915 truncated as an industrial siding. Construction The Hutt Park Railway was constructed to serve the Hutt Park Raceway horse racing track of the Wellington Racing Club (WRC). The WRC was in competition with the Wellington Jockey Club's track in Island Bay and sought the competitive advantage of a railway to provide easier access for patrons.Valley Signals"Hutt Park Railway Company" accessed 12 June 2007. Hutt Valley, New Zealand
The Hutt Valley (or 'The Hutt') is the large area of fairly flat land in the Hutt River valley in the Wellington region of New Zealand. Like the river that flows through it, it takes its name from Sir William Hutt, a director of the New Zealand Company in early colonial New Zealand. The river flows roughly along the course of an active geologic fault, which continues to the south to become the main instrument responsible for the uplift of the South Island's Southern Alps / Kā Tiritiri o te Moana. For this reason, the land rises abruptly to the west of the river; to the east two floodplains have developed. The higher of these is between from the mouth of the river. Beyond this, the river is briefly confined by a steep-sided gorge near Taita, before the land opens up into a long triangular plain close to the outflow into Wellington Harbour. Silver Stream Railway
Silver Stream Railway is a heritage railway at Silverstream in the Hutt Valley near Wellington, New Zealand. It regularly operates preserved New Zealand Railways Department locomotives along a restored section of the Hutt Valley Line (part of the Wairarapa Line) before a deviation was built in 1954. History The beginnings of Silver Stream Railway were in 1967 when the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society began a collection of locomotives and rolling stock. Tracklaying on the old trackbed, formation of the Hutt Valley Line did not begin until 1977. The collection of locomotives and rolling stock had previously been stored at a site by the Gracefield Branch in Seaview, Lower Hutt, Seaview, and this was transferred to the present Silverstream site in 1984. New Zealand Railways Department, NZR D class steam locomotive, steam tank locomotives operated on New Zealand's Rail transport in New Zealand, national railway network. The first entered service in 1874 all had been withdrawn by the end of 1927, which allowed the D classification to be NZR D class (1929), used again in 1929. Shunting, in railway operations, is the process of sorting items of rolling stock into complete trains, or the reverse. In the United States this activity is known as switching. Motive power Motive power is normally provided by a locomotive known as a ''shunter'' (in the UK) or switcher (in the US). Most shunter/switchers are now diesel-powered but steam and even electric locomotives have been used. Where locomotives could not be used (e.g. because of weight restrictions) shunting operations have in the past been effected by horses or capstans. Trentham Railway Station, New Zealand
Trentham Railway Station is an urban railway station in Trentham, a suburb of the city of Upper Hutt in the Wellington region of New Zealand's North Island. It is on the Hutt Valley Line section of the Wairarapa Line and has two side platforms. The station is served by Metlink's electric multiple unit trains of the "Matangi" FP class. A tank locomotive or tank engine is a steam locomotive that carries its water in one or more on-board water tanks, instead of a more traditional tender. Most tank engines also have bunkers (or fuel tanks) to hold fuel; in a tender-tank locomotive a tender holds some or all of the fuel, and may hold some water also. There are several different types of tank locomotive, distinguished by the position and style of the water tanks and fuel bunkers. The most common type has tanks mounted either side of the boiler. NZR Wa Class
The NZR WA class locomotives were a class of Tank locomotive built by New Zealand Railways Department, New Zealand Railways (NZR). Eleven were built at NZR's own Addington Workshops in Christchurch and Hillside Workshops in Dunedin. Four more were converted from old NZR J class (1874), J class 2-6-0 locomotives. Three were fitted with brakes to assist descent on the Fell mountain railway system, Fell-operated Rewanui Branch, Rewanui and Blackball Branch, Roa inclines on the South Island's West Coast Region. These were among the last in use. Preservation Only one WA class has been preserved, number 165. The locomotive was restored by Gisborne City Vintage Railway in 2000. The New Zealand Railways Department, NZR or NZGR (New Zealand Government Railways) and often known as the "Railways", was a government department charged with owning and maintaining New Zealand's railway infrastructure and operating the railway system. Lambton Railway Station
Lambton originally Wellington railway station in Featherston Street, Wellington, New Zealand was the southern passenger terminus for the Hutt Line and the Wairarapa Line from 1885 to 1936 and for lines further north until December 1908. Wellington's third railway station it had been preceded by station buildings temporarily at Pipitea Point and a site further south on Featherston Street beside Wellington's rail freight depot and its Railway Wharf. The Manawatu line Thorndon station was built hastily in the spring of 1885 after the Manawatu line company and the Government failed to agree to share Lambton station. Lambton station's platform closed in July 1936. Wairarapa and Hutt passengers continued to use the building's facilities and its temporary access to the new platforms until the unfinished Bunny Street building opened.
