Francis Hutcheson (philosopher)
Francis Hutcheson LLD (; 8 August 1694 – 8 August 1746) was an Ulster-Scot philosopher born in Ulster to a family of Scottish Presbyterians who became known as one of the founding fathers of the Scottish Enlightenment. He was Professor of Moral Philosophy at Glasgow University and is remembered as author of ''A System of Moral Philosophy''. Hutcheson was an important influence on the works of several significant Enlightenment thinkers, including David Hume and Adam Smith. Early life He is thought to have been born at Drumalig in the parish of Saintfield, County Down, in modern-day Northern Ireland. He was the "son of a Presbyterian minister of Ulster-Scottish stock, who was born in Ireland" but whose roots were in Ayrshire in Scotland. Thaddeus Thomson Hutcheson (October 29, 1915 – August 3, 1986), was a Republican attorney in his native Houston, who was an early figure in the movement to establish a competitive two-party system in the U.S. state of Texas. Background Born to a wealthy family, Hutcheson was the grandson of Joseph C. Hutcheson, a Virginia native who served from Houston as a Democrat in the Texas House of Representatives and the United States House of Representatives from 1893 to 1897 from Texas's 1st congressional district. Thad Hutcheson was the middle of three sons of the attorney William Palmer "Pam" Hutcheson, Sr. (1887-1966), and the former Eleanor Lee Thomson (1890-1961). Charles Sterling Hutcheson (July 23, 1894 – October 24, 1969) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. Early life and education Born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, to Mary Hutcheson Young and her lawyer husband, Mecklenburg county clerk Herbert Farrar Hutcheson, C. Sterling Hutcheson would have six brothers and a sister. His family had been large landowners and influential in Mecklenburg County for more than a century. His grandfather, Joseph C. Hutcheson (1816–1890) was one of the county's largest landowners and a justice of the peace, although he lost his one attempt at election to the Virginia House of Delegates (in 1855). Francis Hutcheson (13 August 1721 – 5 September 1784) was an Irish violinist, composer, physician and lecturer in chemistry. His surname was often misspelled as "Hutchinson". He published his music under the pseudonym "Francis Ireland". Early life Francis Hutcheson was born in Dublin. His parents were the philosopher Francis Hutcheson and his wife Mary (née Wilson) His father was appointed to the Chair of Moral Philosophy in the University of Glasgow in 1729, necessitating a family move. Hutcheson studied in Glasgow University, graduating M.A. there in 1744, and M.D. in 1750. His father died in 1746, leaving the younger Hutcheson property in Ballyhackamore and Drumalig, Saintfield, County Down, as well as County Longford. Joseph Chappell Hutcheson
Joseph Chappell Hutcheson, Sr. (May 18, 1842 – May 25, 1924), was a Texas politician and a Democratic member of the Texas House of Representatives and the United States House of Representatives. Biography Hutcheson was born near Boydton, Virginia on May 18, 1842. He attended the local schools, and graduated from Randolph-Macon College in 1861. He enlisted in the Confederate States Army for the American Civil War, joining the 21st Virginia Infantry Regiment as a private. He served throughout the war and rose to the rank of captain as commander of Company E, 14th Virginia Infantry. After the war Hutcheson attended the University of Virginia School of Law, from which he graduated in 1866. He moved to Anderson, Texas, was admitted to the bar, and began to practice. Bellenden Hutcheson
Bellenden Seymour Hutcheson (16 December 1883 – 9 April 1954) was an American-born Canadian recipient of the Victoria Cross (VC) during the First World War. The VC is the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth forces. Hutcheson was one of the seven Canadians to be awarded the Victoria Cross for their deeds on one single day, 2 September 1918, for actions across the 30 km long Battle of Drocourt-Quéant Line, Drocourt-Quéant Line near Arras, Arras, France. The other six were Arthur George Knight, William Henry Metcalf, Claude Joseph Patrick Nunney, Cyrus Wesley Peck, Walter Leigh Rayfield and John Francis Young. Joseph Collier Hutcheson (July 23, 1906 – February 14, 1972) was a Virginia lawyer and member of the Virginia General Assembly representing Brunswick, Lunenburg and Mecklenburg Counties as a state Senator from 1958 until months before his death in 1972. A member of the Byrd Organization, Hutcheson opposed racial integration and was active in the Massive Resistance vowed by U.S. Senator Harry F. Byrd after the U.S. Supreme Court decisions in ''Brown v. Board of Education''. George Hutcheson
George Hutcheson (died 1639), of Lambhill, Lanarkshire, was joint-founder with his younger brother Thomas Hutcheson, of Hutchesons' Hospital, Glasgow. Life George Hutcheson became a public writer and notary in Glasgow, and by his success in business added considerably to the wealth he had inherited from his father. For a long time he lived in the house where he carried on business, situated on the north side of the Trongate, near the Old Tolbooth. In 1611 he built for his residence the house on the River Kelvin near its junction with the Clyde, known as the Partick Castle, and, to some sources, as "Bishop's Castle," since it once was the site of a country retreat for the medieval Bishops of Glasgow. Hutcheson acquired a high reputation for honesty, and as an illustration of his moderation in his charges, it is stated that he would never take more than sixteen pennies Scots for writing an ordinary bond, be the sum ever so large.
