Hurt (2015 Film)
''Hurt'' is a 2015 Canadian documentary film, directed by Alan Zweig. The film explores the troubled life of Steve Fonyo, the Canadian amputee athlete who completed a cross-Canada run that was known as the "Journey for Lives" to raise funds for cancer research in 1984 and 1985. The film showcases Fonyo's resilience, not only the kind that kept an 18-year-old cancer survivor running the equivalent of a half marathon a day for 400 days for 7924 km. In addition to his 400-day run, the movie also depicts the downfalls of his life, including cocaine addiction, excessive drinking, surviving East Hastings, numerous stints in jail, having his prosthetic leg stolen, and being beaten and stabbed multiple times. In 2017, Zweig released a sequel, ''Hope'', which picks up from where ''Hurt'' left off, chronicling Fonyo's recovery. Alan Zweig is a Canadian documentary filmmaker known for often using film to explore his own life. Early life Alan Zweig was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario and has worked in the film industry as a writer, producer, director, driver, and actor. Before finding success as a filmmaker, Alan Zweig drove a taxicab for fifteen years. Early in his career, Zweig’s short films — ''Trip Sheet'' (1976), ''The Boys'' (1977) and ''Stealing Images'' (1989) – provide rare insight into his early inspirations, influences and themes. Steve Fonyo
Stephen Charles Fonyo Jr. (June 29, 1965 – February 18, 2022) was a Canadian runner with an artificial leg who was a nationally renowned fundraiser for cancer research and treatment, and a former Member of the Order of Canada. Journey for Lives At age 12, Fonyo's left leg was amputated above the knee to prevent the spread of bone cancer. He left school in grade 10 to work in a lawnmower and chainsaw shop. At age 18, he embarked on a run across Canada entitled Journey for Lives to raise funds for cancer research. In doing so, he followed in the footsteps of Terry Fox. Fonyo began his run on March 31, 1984 and completed it 425 days later on May 29, 1985, covering and raising $14 million.
