Hunts Pond State Park
Hunts Pond State Park is a former state park in Chenango County, New York, United States. The former park is located in the town of New Berlin, west of Route 8 and southwest of the village of New Berlin. It has been managed since 2011 as part of Hunts Pond State Forest. History The park was managed by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation prior to 2011, when ownership and management was transferred to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The former park has since been managed as part of Hunts Pond State Forest, a state-managed conservation area. Facilities and recreation The former park is dominated by Hunts Pond in its center. The land remains accessible by the public, and offers space for hiking, fishing, seasonal deer hunting, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. New Berlin, New York
New Berlin is a town in Chenango County, in central New York, United States. The population was 2,682 at the 2010 census. The town contains the village of New Berlin. The town is at the eastern border of the county and is northeast of Norwich. History The first European-American settlers arrived ''circa'' 1790, after the American Revolutionary War. This followed the Iroquois League nations being forced to cede most of their territory to the United States following the defeat of their ally Great Britain. The Mohawk and other Iroquois nations moved to Ontario, Canada, where they were granted some land by the British Crown in compensation. Some small reservations were set up for them in New York state. The Town of New Berlin was founded by a partition of the Town of Norwich in 1807; it was named after Berlin, Germany, from which many new settlers had come. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (informally referred to as NYSDEC, DEC, EnCon or NYSENCON) is a department of New York state government. New York State Route 8
New York State Route 8 (NY 8) is a north-south state highway in the central part of New York in the United States. It runs in a southwest-to-northeast direction from the Southern Tier to the northern part of Lake George. The southern terminus of the route is at an interchange with NY 17, where it begins concurrent with NY 10 in the town of Deposit. Protected areas or conservation areas are locations which receive protection because of their recognized natural, ecological or cultural values. Sherburne, New York
Sherburne is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 4,048 at the 2010 census. The town contains two villages, Sherburne and Earlville. The town is at the northern border of Chenango County. History The area that became Sherburne, part of the Chenango River valley, was originally inhabited by the Oneida people, until the late 1780s when the state of New York purchased the land from them. These parcels were later sold at auction in New York City. The settlement of Sherburne occurred around 1792 near the present-day Sherburne village. The town was named after the tune "Sherburne", written by Daniel Read in 1783. The early inhabitants had a habit of frequently singing the tune, which was a great favorite with them.
