Hunslet F.C. (1883)
Hunslet F.C. was a professional rugby league club in Hunslet, West Yorkshire, England, which played in the Rugby Football League from 1895 until being dissolved in 1973. Founded in 1883, before the split between rugby league and rugby union, Hunslet were a strong force in the early years of the Northern Rugby Football Union, winning All Four Cups in 1908. New Hunslet was formed and took Hunslet's place for the 1973-74 season. History 1883-1900: Foundation and early years A special general meeting of the Hunslet Cricket Club was held on 21 May 1883, the committee resolved to grant two local teams: Albion and Excelsior the sum of £130 to form the Hunslet Rugby Club at Woodhouse Hill. Parkside, Hunslet
Parkside was a rugby league stadium in Hunslet, Leeds, England. It was home to Hunslet F.C. (1883), Hunslet F.C. rugby league club and the source of their nickname, the Parksiders. Hunslet R.L.F.C., Hunslet now play at the South Leeds Stadium which is less than half a mile from the former site of Parkside. The stadium Adjacent to the rugby pitch, there was a bowling green and a cricket ground. Parkside's surface had the reputation as being the best in the game and was often used by touring Australian teams as a training ground. The Mother Benson’s End was named after the old lady who washed the players’ kit and lived in one of the Low Fold farm cottages which were situated at that end of the ground. Rugby football is the collective name for the team sports of rugby union and rugby league. Harold Buck was an English professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1910s and 1920s. He played at club level for Hunslet and Leeds, as a . In November 1921, Buck became rugby league's first £1,000 player when he transferred from Hunslet to Leeds, (based on increases in average earnings, this would be approximately £152,100 in 2018). Harry Jepson OBE Memorial Cup
The Harry Jepson OBE Memorial Cup (formerly the Lazenby Cup until 2017) is an annual pre-season friendly between English rugby league teams Leeds Rhinos and Hunslet. History The Lazenby Cup was first played in 1912 after Tracey Lazenby donated the trophy to be played for by Hunslet and Leeds Rhinos with the proceeds going to junior rugby in the city. Hunslet and Leeds both played for the trophy until 1972, after Leeds played Bramley until 1985 when the trophy was retired until 2004 when the trophy was contested between Leeds and Hunslet again. Albert Goldthorpe
Albert Edward Goldthorpe (3 November 1871 – 8 January 1943) was an English rugby footballer from the period around 1895's schism in English rugby, which led to the formation of rugby league football around the turn of the century. Career One of five brothers (four of whom at one period played together in the same Hunslet team), Goldthorpe made his first team début with Hunslet, at , as a 16-year-old in October, 1888. He went on to become one of the best known figures in English rugby, both before and after the split, and he was one of the finest individual talents in the game at the time of the Northern Union's formation in 1895. Yorkshire Cup (rugby Union)
The Yorkshire Cup is an England, English Rugby Football Union competition founded in 1878. It is organised by the Yorkshire Rugby Football Union and is open to all eligible clubs in the Yorkshire area. It was initially known as the Yorkshire Challenge Cup. The Yorkshire Senior Cup is currently the premier county cup competition for club sides based in Yorkshire that play in tier 4 (National League 2 North), tier 5 (National League 3 North) and tier 6 (North 1 East) of the English rugby union league system. 1905–06 Northern Rugby Football Union Season
The 1905–06 Northern Rugby Football Union season was the 11th season of rugby league football. Season summary Leigh won the Championship for the first time this season and Bradford their first Challenge Cup. The two divisions were combined into one competition, with Lancaster dropping out to reduce it to 31 teams. Clubs from the same county all played each other, and arranged inter-county matches as and when they could. Because not all clubs played the same number of matches positions were decided on percentages. Featherstone Rovers, who were an amateur team at this time knocked a professional side out of the Challenge Cup, when they beat Widnes 23-2 in the second round. There was no county league competition this season. The inaugural Rugby league county cups took place this season, and Wigan beat Leigh 0–0 (replay 8–0) to win the Lancashire Cup, and Hunslet beat Halifax 13–3 to win the Yorkshire County Cup. Billy Batten
William Batten (26 May 1889 – 26 January 1959) was an English professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1900s, 1910s and 1920s. He played at representative level for Great Britain, England and Yorkshire, and at club level for Hunslet, Hull F.C. ( Heritage №), Wakefield Trinity ( Heritage № 306), and Castleford ( Heritage №), as a , or , i.e. number 1, 2 or 5, or, 3 or 4. He is noted as one of the greatest of his era, one of the game's first superstars, Batten was a brilliant athlete and a huge crowd-puller – and also well aware of his own worth. Leeds Parish Church RFC was a semi-professional rugby league club based in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. The club played semi-professional rugby league for a total of five seasons from 1896–97 to 1900–01. Each of the five seasons was spent in the Yorkshire Senior Competition.
