Hungarian Rhapsody (1928 Film)
''Hungarian Rhapsody'' (German: ''Ungarische Rhapsodie'') is a 1928 German silent drama film directed by Hanns Schwarz and starring Lil Dagover, Willy Fritsch and Dita Parlo. It depicts the life of an impoverished Hungarian aristocrat. It was shot at the Babelsberg Studios in Berlin and on location in Southern Hungary. Premiering at the Ufa-Palast am Zoo, it was one of the most popular German films released that year. In 1929 a soundtrack was added to the film, leading to UFA producer Erich Pommer to describe it as his first "sound film", rather than ''Melody of the Heart''.Hardt p.113 The film's sets were designed by the art director Erich Kettelhut. Hanns Schwarz
Hanns Schwarz (11 February 1888 – 27 October 1945) was an Austrian Empire, Austrian film director. He was born in Vienna on 11 February 1888. Biography He directed twenty four films between 1924 and 1937 in both English-language, English and German-language, German. During the late silent film, silent and early sound era, sound eras, he was a leading director at the large German studio Universum Film AG, UFA. In the early 1930s he worked on several Multiple-language version, multi-language version films for UFA, producing the same films in distinct German and foreign-language versions. Schwarz was Jewish and was therefore forced to leave Germany in 1933 when the Nazis took over, going into exile in Britain. His last film was the 1937 British thriller ''Return of the Scarlet Pimpernel''. He died in California on 27 October 1945. Babelsberg Film Studio (german: Filmstudio Babelsberg), located in Potsdam-Babelsberg outside Berlin, Germany, is the second oldest large-scale film studio in the world only preceded by the Danish Nordisk Film (est. 1906), producing films since 1912. With a total area of about and a studio area of about it is Europe's largest film studio. Erich Karl Heinrich Kettelhut (1 November 1893 – 13 March 1979) was a German production designer, Art director#In film, art director and set decorator. Kettelhut is considered one of the most important artists in the history of early German cinema, mainly for his set direction for ''Die Nibelungen'' (1924) and his design and visual effects for ''Metropolis (1927 film), Metropolis'' (1927). His early career was defined by a working relationship with fellow designers Otto Hunte and Karl Vollbrecht, the trio working on many of Fritz Lang's early German films. Despite being best known for his iconic visuals on several of the most important films of German Expressionism, German Expressionist cinema, he is also noted for a career spanning into the 1960s and his work on more light-hearted films and musicals. ''Melody of the Heart'' (german: Melodie des Herzens) is a 1929 German musical film directed by Hanns Schwarz and starring Dita Parlo, Willy Fritsch and Gerő Mály. The film was the first successful sound film produced by the German major studio Universum Film AG (Ufa) and was credited with establishing the popularity of the operetta film. It was shot in Hungary. Initially the film was intended to be silent, but halfway through production its producer Erich Pommer was ordered by his superiors to convert it into a sound film. Ufa had recently made a deal with the Klangfilm syndicate (consisting of Siemens & Halske, AEG, and Polyphon-Werke AG (who sold Polydor records) to license the Tri-Ergon sound film system, under the name 'Ufa-Klang'. Ufa-Palast Am Zoo
The Ufa-Palast am Zoo, located near Berlin Zoological Garden in the New West area of Charlottenburg, was a major Berlin cinema owned by Universum Film AG, or Ufa. Opened in 1919 and enlarged in 1925, it was the largest cinema in Germany until 1929 and was one of the main locations of film premières in the country. The building was destroyed in November 1943 during the Bombing of Berlin in World War II and replaced in 1957 by the Zoo Palast. History The Neo-Romanesque building at Hardenbergstraße was designed as an exhibition hall by architect Carl Gause (1851–1907), an alumnus of the Bauakademie who had also drawn plans for the Hotel Adlon.
