Hundred Of Evan, New South Wales
The Hundred of Evan was a former lands administrative division located on the western edge of Greater Sydney, corresponding approximately to the modern City of Penrith. It was one of the thirteen Hundred (country subdivision), hundreds in the Cumberland County, New South Wales, County of Cumberland, which were published in the government gazette of May 27, 1835, and repealed on January 21, 1888. Upon its creation as a Hundred (county division), Hundred in 1835, Evan was divided into three parishes, being (from east to west) Melville, Claremont, and Mulgoa, New South Wales, Mulgoa. Evan District The area had been settled for several decades, and was originally known as the District of Evan, and was founded on the eastern side of the Nepean River. It was named in honour of Evan Nepean, Sir Evan Nepean. Cumberland County is a county in the State of New South Wales, Australia. Most of the Sydney metropolitan area is located within the County of Cumberland. The County of Cumberland stretches from Broken Bay to the north, the Hawkesbury River to the north-west, the Nepean River to the west, the Cataract River to the south-west and the northern suburbs of Wollongong to the south. It includes the area of the Cumberland Plain. History The name ''Cumberland'' was conferred by Governor Arthur Phillip in honour of Prince Henry Duke of Cumberland and Strathearn at a gathering to celebrate the birthday of his brother, King George III, on 4 June 1788. The county has been marked on maps since the start of the colony, as shown along the key on 1789 mapdescribing Port Jackson as being within the county of Cumberland.
