John Humphrys
Desmond John Humphrys (born 17 August 1943) is a Welsh broadcaster. From 1981 to 1987 he was the main presenter for the '' Nine O'Clock News'', the flagship BBC News television programme, and from 1987 until 2019 he presented on the BBC Radio 4 breakfast programme ''Today''. He was the host of the BBC Two television quiz show ''Mastermind'' from 2003 to 2021, for a total of 735 episodes. Humphrys has a reputation as an outspoken and challenging interviewer; occasionally politicians have been critical of his style after being subjected to a tough interview on live radio. Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Francis Henry Humphrys (24 April 1879 – 28 August 1971) was a British cricketer, colonial administrator and diplomat. Early life and cricket Francis Henry Humphrys was born in Shropshire, at Beatrice Street, Oswestry, where his father was assistant master at Oswestry School. He was educated at Shrewsbury School, where he was captain of cricket and head of the school, and Christ Church, Oxford, where he played first-class cricket for Oxford University. His first-class debut came against the touring Australians in 1899. He played 3 further first-class matches in 1900, the last coming against Sussex. In his 4 first-class matches, he took 13 wickets at a bowling average of 19.46, with best figures of 4/16. While at school, and later, he also played Minor Counties Championship cricket for Wiltshire. George Robert Humphrys (16 April 1952 – 18 August 2008) was a Welsh broadcaster, chiefly known as a sports presenter on BBC Wales. Biography Humphrys was born in Splott, a poor working-class district of central Cardiff and was the younger brother of journalist and television presenter John Humphrys. Humphrys was one of five children born to Winifred Mary (Matthews), a hairdresser and Edward George Humphrys, a self-employed French polisher. Encouraged to do his homework, he passed the eleven plus exam and became a pupil at Cardiff High School, then a grammar school. After university, he became a newspaper journalist, working on various publications until he joined the Cardiff-based '' Western Mail.'' Stephen Peter Humphrys (born 15 September 1997) is an English professional footballer who plays as a forward for Wigan Athletic. Club career Fulham On 17 December 2016, Humphrys made his professional debut in the EFL Championship against Derby County at Craven Cottage. William Humphrys
William Humphrys (1794 – 21 January 1865) was an engraver of pictures, book illustrations and postage stamps. Humphrys was born in Dublin. At an early age he moved to the United States where he studied engraving techniques under George Murray in Philadelphia. He began his career as engraver in 1815 and was involved in the engraving of vignettes for bank notes and engravings for book illustrations. The illustrations in the books by poets Bryant and Longfellow were the work of Humphrys.Melville, Fred J, ''Postage Stamps in the Making'', 1916, Stanley Gibbons, p.68 He moved to England in 1823 where he worked on book illustrations for individual publishers.
