The Humaitá National Forest ( pt, Floresta Nacional de Humaitá) is a national forest in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. Location The Humaitá National Forest is in the Humaitá municipality of the state of Amazonas. It covers an area of . The forest is bounded by the border with Rondônia to the south, the Madeira River to the west and the Trans-Amazonian Highway (BR-230) to the north. The Campos Amazônicos National Park is some distance east of the national forest. The national forest is in the lower plateau of the western Amazon, consisting of extensive flat areas with occasional formations of higher land. Altitudes range from above sea level. Drainage is poor, and small lakes form in the rainy season and later disappear. The forest is in the Madeira River basin, on the right bank of the Madeira. Humaitá
Humaitá is a town and ''distrito'' on the Paraguay River in southern Paraguay. During the Paraguayan War, it served as the main Paraguayan stronghold from 1866 until its fall in August 1868. During that time, it housed as many as 24,000 troops. Up until March 1868, it was the de facto home of the Paraguayan government. Being at 275 km south of Asunción, this is a Paraguayan city that has a great historical and cultural heritage with portions of the old fortifications, including some large earthworks, still visible. It also possesses the remains of a Jesuit church dating from the 18th century. Toponymy Humaitá comes from the Guaraní words “yma” (meaning ancient) and “itá” (meaning stone).
