Hugo Friedlander
Hugo Friedlander (born Friedländer, January 1850 – 1 October 1928) was a New Zealand businessman, local politician, and horse breeder from Ashburton. Friedlander was born in a Jewish family in Kolmar, in the Prussian Province of Posen in 1850. The Victorian gold rush attracted him and his two brothers, Rudolph and Max, to come out to Australia. The brothers came to New Zealand in the late 1860s. At first, Friedlander lived in Orari working for Joseph Mendelson, riding into Ashburton every morning for an 8 am arrival (a distance of about ). Friedlander moved to Ashburton in 1872. In 1876, the three brothers bought Mendelson's business, which they renamed Friedlander Brothers. Chodzież
Chodzież (german: Kolmar in Posen) is a town in northwestern Poland with 17,976 inhabitants as of December 2021. Situated in the Chodzież County, Greater Poland Voivodeship (since 1999), previously in Piła Voivodeship (1975–1998). Geography Chodzież is located in the northern part of Greater Poland (western Poland), in the Chodzieskie lakelands. The most important characteristics of this lakeland area are its typical postglacial landforms, forests of pines and mixed woodlands, and lakes. William Steward (New Zealand Politician)
Sir William Jukes Steward (20 January 1841 – 30 October 1912) was a New Zealand politician and the first Liberal Speaker of the New Zealand House of Representatives. He represented South Canterbury electorates in Parliament for a total of 34 years, before being appointed to the Legislative Council. He served briefly on the Otago Provincial Council and was Mayor of Oamaru for three years. Early life Steward was born in Reading, Berkshire, in England in 1841. He was educated at King Edward VI. Grammar School in Ludlow (to which his family had moved, his boyhood home at Numbers 4–5 King Street now marked by a plaque), and Dr Benham's Commercial School in Gloucester. He emigrated to New Zealand apparently on the ''Mersey'' in 1862, but his name is not included in the passenger list for the 25 September 1862 arrival. Richard Moore (New Zealand Politician)
Richard Moore (7 March 1849 – 12 September 1936) was an independent conservative Member of Parliament in New Zealand and Mayor of Kaiapoi. Biography Moore was born in London on 7 March 1849, the son of shoemaker John Moore and his wife Ann. He left England with his family on the ''Steadfast'' in February 1851, which arrived in Lyttelton on 8 June of that year. The family settled in Kaiapoi. At 21, he set himself up as a coachbuilder and wheelwright. Later on, he added saddlery to his business. When he sold the business he bought a shareholding in the Kaiapoi Produce Company and later became its sole owner. He was a large shareholder in the Kaiapoi Woollen Company. Moore chaired the school committee for 14 years. He was a member of the Kaiapoi Borough Council for eight years and was Mayor of Kaiapoi from 1884 to 1887. George Laurenson
George Laurenson (5 July 1857 – 19 November 1913) was a New Zealand Member of Parliament for in the South Island. Early life The ''Lyttelton Times'' parliamentary correspondent described Laurenson as: "a Scotchman by birth, a Shetlander by education, a New Zealander by adoption, a storekeeper by trade, and a yachtsman by preference." George Laurenson was a partner in Forbes and Co, Ships Chandlers, of Lyttelton. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and was educated in the Shetland Islands.
