Sir Hugh Muir Nelson, (31 December 1833 – 1 January 1906) was Premier of Queensland from 1893 to 1898. Early life Hugh Nelson was born at Kilmarnock, Scotland, the son of William Lambie Nelson. Hugh was educated at the Edinburgh High School, and began a promising course under Sir William Hamilton at Edinburgh University. This was cut short when he went with his father to Queensland in 1853 and settled at Ipswich. Hugh Nelson obtained a position in a mercantile house, and then took up a pastoral life about six miles out of Ipswich. He then went to the Darling Downs to manage a station, and in 1870 married Janet, daughter of Duncan McIntyre. Afterwards Nelson took up Loudon station in the Dalby district. His father, William Lambie Nelson, was elected to the first Queensland parliament in 1860 but was unseated because he was a minister of religion. Hugh Nelson (American Politician)
Hugh Nelson (September 30, 1768March 18, 1836) was an American politician and U.S. Representative from Virginia. He was the son of Thomas Nelson Jr. Biography Born in Yorktown in the Colony of Virginia, Nelson graduated from the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia, in 1780. He served in the Senate of Virginia 1786–1791, and in the Virginia House of Delegates 1805-1809 and 1828–1829. He was Speaker of the latter house 1807–1809. Nelson also served as judge of the general court. Nelson was a presidential elector in 1808. Nelson was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Twelfth and to the five succeeding Congresses and served from March 4, 1811, until his resignation on January 14, 1823, having received an appointment in the diplomatic service. He served as chairman of the Committee on the Judiciary ( Fourteenth, Fifteenth, and Seventeenth Congresses). Hugh Nelson (Canadian Politician)
Hugh Nelson (May 25, 1830 – March 3, 1893) was a Canadian parliamentarian and the fourth Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. Born in his father's residence, Shore Cottage in Magheramorne, Larne, County Antrim, Ireland, the son of Robert Nelson, Esq. and Frances Quinn, he emigrated to California in 1854. He arrived in British Columbia in 1858, but unlike the horde of others who arrived in that year he had not come in pursuit of gold but to participate in the building of the colony as an English dominion. Eschewing the goldfields themselves, he founded the B.C. & Victoria Express Company, which had the dominant share of the freight and travel market between Victoria and New Westminster and Yale, with partner George Dietz, and also the lumbering firm Moody, Dietz and Nelson, the third partner of which was Sewell Moody, which was the operating name of Moodyville Sawmill Co. in what is now North Vancouver.
