Hugh Mitchell (politician)
Hugh Burnton Mitchell (March 22, 1907June 10, 1996), was an American politician and journalist who served as a member of the United States Senate from 1944 to 1946 and as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1949 to 1953. He represented the state of Washington. He left Dartmouth College and the class of 1930 in 1929 when the Great Crash hit. He traveled to Washington State and a job as a sports reporter in 1929, but the political reporter for the Everett News was removed to prevent bias, as she was involved with the Mayor. Mitchell took over the political beat and, assessing the changing political climate, was among the first if not the first in the area to predict Franklin Roosevelt's victory as President in 1932. Mitchell, a Democrat, was appointed on January 10, 1945 to fill a vacancy in the Senate caused by the resignation of Monrad Wallgren, who Mitchell had been executive assistant to since 1933. Hugh Mitchell (Scottish Footballer)
Capt. Hugh Mitchell (3 December 1849 – 16 August 1937) was a Scottish member of the Royal Engineers who later became a barrister. In his youth he was a keen footballer who played for the Royal Engineers in the 1872 FA Cup Final and appeared for Scotland in two of the representative matches played against England in 1871 and 1872. Family and education Mitchell was born in Marylebone, London, the son of Lieut. Col. Hugh Mitchell of the Madras army and his wife Jessie née McCaskill. He was educated at Harrow School between 1864 and 1867 before going to the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. At Harrow, he was a keen sportsman, representing the school at football, cricket and shooting. In 1878, he married Mary Catherine "Katie" Creswell, the sister of Col. Edmund Creswell who had played alongside him in the 1872 FA Cup Final. They had seven children, including Philip Euen Mitchell (1890–1964), who served as Governor of Uganda, Fiji and Kenya. Hugh Mitchell (born 22 November 1934) is a former Australian rules footballer and coach who played for Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and Dandenong in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) during the 1950s and 1960s. Early career at Essendon Recruited from the local junior team the Moonee Imperials, Mitchell was so impressive with the Essendon thirds (under-19s) in his first season that he was promoted to the firsts; and, apart from times when injured (he was prone to leg injuries), he played as a firsts regular. He played 77 consecutive games for the firsts from 1954 to 1958. He was a fast and clever footballer, a beautiful drop kick and very elusive; he had an astounding ability to anticipate opponents and popped up unexpectedly just where he was needed.
