Hugh McClelland (politician)
Hugh McClelland (27 December 1875 – 14 December 1958) was an Australian politician. He was born in Smeaton, Victoria, his family reportedly having come to Victoria with the Henty family. He was educated at state schools before becoming a farmer at Berriwillock. He was president and a councillor of the Shire of Wycheproof, chairman of the Victorian Wheat Growers' Corporation, an executive member of the Chamber of Agriculture, and a member of the advisory committee to the Wheat Board. He was an unsuccessful candidate for the Victorian Legislative Assembly seat of Swan Hill at the 1914 state election and 1917 state election. In 1931, he was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the Country Party member for Wimmera, and was re-elected in 1934. In 1937, McClelland lost Country Party preselection for the 1937 election to Alexander Wilson, who unlike McClelland opposed the federal composite ministry. The Division of Wimmera was an Australian electoral division in the state of Victoria. It was named after the Wimmera region in which it was located. Sir Earle Christmas Grafton Page (8 August 188020 December 1961) was an Australian surgeon and politician who served as the 11th Prime Minister of Australia, holding office for 19 days after the death of Joseph Lyons in 1939. He was the leader of the Country Party from 1921 to 1939, and was the most influential figure in its early years. Page was born in Grafton, New South Wales. He entered the University of Sydney at the age of 15, and completed a degree in medicine at the age of 21. After completing his medical residency at Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, he moved back to Grafton and opened a private hospital. He soon became involved in local politics, and in 1915 purchased a part-share in ''The Daily Examiner'', a local newspaper. He also briefly served as a military surgeon during World War I. 1937 Australian Federal Election
The 1937 Australian federal election was held in Australia on 23 October 1937. All 74 seats in the House of Representatives, and 19 of the 36 seats in the Senate were up for election. The incumbent UAP–Country coalition government, led by Prime Minister Joseph Lyons, defeated the opposition Labor Party under John Curtin. The election is notable in that the Country Party achieved its highest-ever primary vote in the lower house, thereby winning nearly a quarter of all lower-house seats. At the 1934 election nine seats in New South Wales had been won by Lang Labor. Following the reunion of the two Labor parties in February 1936, these were held by their members as ALP seats at the 1937 election.
