Hugh Macalister
George Hugh Kidd Macalister (3 May 1879 – 2 November 1930) was a medical doctor, Professor of Clinical Medicine and Lecturer on Therapeutics, King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore, from 1918 until his death. Family He was the youngest son of Alexander Macalister, professor of anatomy at Cambridge University. Brother to R.A. Stewart Macalister, Edith Florence Boyle Macalister, Margaret Anne MacDougal Macalister. Widower of Norah O'Brien Tandy (died in childbirth). Husband of Margaret Gray Moir. Margaret and he went on to have two daughters. Elspeth Macalister and Jean Moira Edith Macalister. King Edward VII Medical College (KEMC) was a medical school from 1905 to 1949 in Singapore, the first one in what was then Malaya. It was officially named King Edward VII Medical College in 1921 and subsequently became the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya. History The establishment of King Edward VII Medical College began with the issue of shortage of medical and public health assistants in Singapore and Penang in the late 1890s. This problem was voiced by the Board of Education in April 1902. Thus, the prospect of its own establishment has emerged from among the board members. Alexander Macalister
Prof Alexander Macalister FRS Hon.FRSE FSA FRAI (9 April 18442 September 1919) was an Irish anatomist, Professor of Anatomy, Cambridge University, from 1883 until his death. He was a Fellow of St John’s College, Cambridge. Life He was born in Dublin, the second son of Robert Macalister, secretary of the Sunday School Society of Ireland, and his wife (née Boyle). Alexander was educated locally then studied medicine at Trinity College, Dublin. He qualified at the Irish Royal Colleges in 1861, became M.B. at Trinity College ten years later and M.D. in 1876. After acting as demonstrator of anatomy at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, he was appointed professor of zoology, and eight years later professor of anatomy and chirurgery, at Dublin. In 1883, he succeeded Sir George Murray Humphrey in the chair of anatomy at Cambridge, and held this post for thirty-six years. He was a prolific writer. Donald MacAlister
Sir Donald MacAlister, 1st Baronet of Tarbet (17 May 1854 – 15 January 1934) was a Scottish physician who was Principal and Vice-Chancellor and, later, Chancellor of the University of Glasgow. He was a member of the Cambridge Apostles intellectual secret society, from 1876. From 1904 to 1931 he was President of the General Medical Council. Early life Donald MacAlister was born in Perth, on 17 May 1854, the son of Daniel MacAlister (also spelt MacAllister), a publisher's agent and book-deliverer, living at 2 Earls Dykes in Perth who later went to live in Liverpool to work for Blackie and Son.
