Hugh Gavin
Lodovic Hugh Gavin (25 October 1878 – 13 November 1940) was an Australian rules footballer who played 108 games for the Essendon Football Club in the years following the formation of the Victorian Football League (VFL). Football Gavin, a key defender, was a member of Essendon's inaugural premiership side in 1897 and was listed as Essendon's best player in the 1901 grand final. In 1902 he supposedly won a best and fairest award for his performances for Essendon. He was a regular Victorian representative in interstate football and in 1903 he spent a season in the West Australian goldfields with Boulder City, and being described as the top player of the goldfields in that year. He returned home to Essendon in 1904 and during the season took over as captain of the club. In 1905 he played with Essendon Association in the Victorian Football Association. Essendon (Association) Football Club (often shortened to Essendon 'A') was an Australian rules football club which played in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) from 1900 until 1921. The ''Dreadnoughts'' wore black and red, and played their home games at the Essendon Recreation Reserve (known today as Windy Hill). They were also known by the name "Essendon Town" (1900–1904), in order to distinguish them from the Essendon Football Club that played in the Victorian Football League (VFL). 1911 Adelaide Carnival
The 1911 Adelaide Carnival was the second edition of the Australasian Football Carnival, an Australian rules football interstate competition. It took place from 2 to 12 August at Adelaide Oval. A crowd of 20,000 witnessed South Australia convincingly defeat Victoria in the final to win the championship. Organisation Home state South Australia was joined by teams representing Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania and New South Wales. Two teams which had competed in the 1908 Melbourne Carnival – Queensland and New Zealand – did not send teams in 1911. The five teams competed in a single division, each playing the others once. The state with the best record from those games would win the tournament; or, if two teams shared the best record, a final would have been staged. All games were played at Adelaide Oval.
