Huerfano County, Colorado
Huerfano County (; ) is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census, the population was 6,820. The county seat is Walsenburg, Colorado, Walsenburg. The county, whose name comes from the Spanish language, Spanish ''huérfano'' meaning "orphan", was named for the Huerfano Butte, a local landmark. The area of Huerfano County boomed early in the 1900s with the discovery of large coal deposits. After large scale World War II coal demand ended in the 1940s Walsenburg and Huerfano saw a steady economic decline through 2015. Historical Huerfano County was one of the original 17 counties created by the Territory of Colorado on November 1, 1861, and was originally larger than its present size. On November 2, 1870, the Colorado General Assembly created Greenwood County, Colorado Territory, Greenwood County from former Cheyenne and Arapaho tribal land and the eastern portion of Huerfano County. Huerfano ( nv, ) is a census-designated place (CDP) in San Juan County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 104 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Farmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Huerfano is named after El Huerfano Mountain, located a mile to the northeast. Geography Huerfano is located at (36.526359, -108.031135). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , all land. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 104 people, 28 households, and 22 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3.9 people per square mile (1.5/km2). There were 36 housing units at an average density of 1.3 per square mile (0.5/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 99.04% Native American and 0.96% White. There were 28 households, out of which 39.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.1% were married couples living together, 17.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.4% were non-families. 14 ... Huerfano Butte (Arizona)
Huerfano Butte (''English:'' "Orphan Butte") is a small rocky butte located on the western flank of the Santa Rita Mountains in southeastern Pima County, Arizona. With an elevation of , Huerfano Butte is one of the dominant landmarks in the Santa Rita Experimental Range, as well as an important prehistoric archaeological site. Archaeology Huerfano Butte and the surrounding area were utilized by the Hohokam as early as circa 1100 CE. Shallow bedrock forces ground water to surface in a small pool located in a wash on the south side of the butte. Exposed outcrops of granite on either side of the wash have about fifty bedrock mortars, at least two small bedrock metates, and numerous smaller cupules. Along the same wash is a vertical stone surface with approximately two dozen weathered pictographs painted in red hematite. Huerfano Butte
Huerfano Butte (; ) is a volcanic plug or hypabyssal plug located north of Walsenburg in Huerfano County, Colorado, United States. Named ''Huérfano'' (English: orphan) by early Spanish explorers, it rises above the south side of the Huerfano River with its peak about 200 feet above the floodplain. A historical marker was placed on the east side of Interstate 25 to commemorate its position near the Trapper's Trail to Taos, New Mexico. It was passed by John Williams Gunnison and John C. Frémont during their surveys for the railroads. Other places are now also named after the butte, Huerfano County and Huerfano River.
