Hudson Bay ( iu, ᑕᓯᐅᔭᕐᔪᐊᕐᒃ, french: Baie d’Hudson, Inuinnaqtun: Tahiuyaryuaq) is a territorial electoral district ( riding) for the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut, Canada. Peter Kattuk (2 June 1950 – 20 November 2019) was a Canadian politician from Nunavut. Early life He was born in the Belcher Islands, Northwest Territories (now Nunavut) and lived in Sanikiluaq. 2017 Nunavut General Election
The 2017 Nunavut general election was held on October 30, 2017 to return the members of the 5th Nunavut Legislature. The fifth general election held since the creation of the territory in 1999, it was the first election held under Nunavut's new fixed election dates law, which requires elections to be held no more than four years after the prior election. Unlike most federal or provincial elections in Canada, elections to the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut are conducted on a non-partisan consensus government model, in which all candidates run as independents rather than being nominated by political parties. The 2013 Nunavut general election was held October 28, 2013, to elect 22 members to the 4th Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. Allan Rumbolt is a Canadian politician, who was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for the electoral district of Hudson Bay in the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in the 2008 territorial election. He was re-elected in 2013 and 2017 Early life Allan Rumbolt was born in Little Catalina, Newfoundland and Labrador in 1966. Career In 1987, Rumbolt moved to Nunavut (then the Northwest Territories) to work for The North West Company, and worked in several communities there until 1990, when he settled in Sanikiluaq with the Company. 2008 Nunavut General Election
The 2008 Nunavut General Election was held on October 27, 2008, to return members to the 3rd Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. The election was contested across 15 of Nunavut's 19 electoral districts under the first past the post system of voting. Due to local circumstances, the election was delayed in two districts, and two districts did not hold elections as their incumbent MLAs faced no opposition and were acclaimed back into office. Ten of the 15 seats went to first-time MLAs, four of whom defeated incumbents. Premier Paul Okalik and Finance Minister Louis Tapardjuk were the only two cabinet ministers to keep their seats. The 2004 Nunavut general election was held on February 16, 2004, to elect the 19 members of the 2nd Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. Premier Paul Okalik asked for the five-year-old territory's first parliament to be dissolved on January 16. Moses Appaqaq
Moses Appaqaq Jr. (born April 2, 1946) is a soapstone carver, former retail clerk, and former territorial-level politician from Sanikiluaq, Northwest Territories (now Nunavut). Appaqaq ran for a seat in the 1979 Northwest Territories general election, he won the Hudson Bay electoral district and his first term in office. Appaqaq ran for a second term in the 1983 Northwest Territories general election. In that election he defeated six other candidates. Appaqaq was defeated running for a third term in office by Charlie Crow in the 1987 Northwest Territories general election. After politics he became a director on the board of Qikittaluk Corporation. Appaqaq attempted a return to politics running in the Hudson Bay electoral district in the 1999 Nunavut general election. Sanikiluaq, Nunavut
Sanikiluaq ( iu, ᓴᓂᑭᓗᐊᖅ ) is a municipality and Inuit community located on the north coast of Flaherty Island in Hudson Bay, on the Belcher Islands. Despite being geographically much closer to the shores of Ontario and Quebec, the community and the Belcher Islands lie within the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut, Canada. History The community was developed in the early 1970s to replace "South Camp", located further south in the island group. To the north of the town is Kinngaaluk Territorial Park, a space designed for camping, cultural expression, and seasonal hunting. The park contains archeological remains deposited by the Dorset and Thule cultures. The park is expected to be formally designated as such by the Nunavut legislature in 2019.
