Huddersfield Giants
Huddersfield Giants are an English professional rugby league club from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, the birthplace of rugby league, who play in the Super League competition. They play their home games at the John Smiths Stadium which is shared with Huddersfield Town F.C. Huddersfield is also one of the original twenty-two rugby clubs that formed the Northern Rugby Football Union in 1895, making them one of the world's first rugby league teams. The club itself was founded in 1864, making it the oldest rugby league club in the world. They have won seven Championships and six Challenge Cups, but did not earn another honour between 1962 and 2013 until gaining the 2013 League Leaders Shield after topping the table for the first time in 81 years. Huddersfield is a market town in the Kirklees district in West Yorkshire, England. It is the administrative centre and largest settlement in the Kirklees district. The town is in the foothills of the Pennines. The River Holme's confluence into the similar-sized River Colne, West Yorkshire, Colne to the south of the town centre which then flows into the River Calder, West Yorkshire, Calder in the north eastern outskirts of the town. 1919–20 Northern Rugby Football Union Season
The 1919–20 Northern Rugby Football Union season was the 25th season of rugby league football. Season summary A full championship competition returned after suspension during the First World War as well as a full Challenge Cup campaign. Hull F.C. recorded their first Championship when they defeated Huddersfield 3-2 in the play-off final. Huddersfield had ended the regular season as league leaders and won the Challenge Cup defeating Wigan 21-10. Widnes won the Lancashire League and Huddersfield won the Yorkshire League. Oldham beat Rochdale Hornets 7–0 to win the Lancashire Cup, and Huddersfield beat Leeds 24–5 to win the Yorkshire County Cup. Sheffield Eagles (1984)
The Sheffield Eagles are a professional rugby league club that play in the Betfred Championship. The club play their home games at the Olympic Legacy Park (OLP) on the former site of Don Valley Stadium, their former ground. The original club was formed in 1984 and formerly competed in the Super League. The new, current club was formed in 2000 following a merger of the old club with Huddersfield Giants. The old club's biggest achievement was winning the Challenge Cup in 1998. Sheffield were the inaugural winners of the 1895 Cup, after they beat Widnes at Wembley Stadium on 24 August 2019. Fartown, Huddersfield
Fartown is a district of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England that starts north of the town centre. Fartown runs for approximately either side of the A641 main Huddersfield to Bradford Road. The district area stretches from the top of Woodhouse Hill to the Halifax Old Road with a population of 4,735 according to the 2001 Census. Fartown currently has a multi-ethnic population with a significant percentage of people hailing from South Asian and West Indian backgrounds. Two major hills are also situated in Fartown, Woodhouse Hill towards Sheepridge and York Avenue towards Cowcliffe. North Huddersfield Trust School is situated just off Woodhouse Hill. Fartown Ground
The Fartown Ground or just simply Fartown is a sports ground located in the Huddersfield suburb of Fartown in West Yorkshire, England and is predominantly famous for being the home ground of Huddersfield Rugby League Club from 1878 to 1992. The grounds consisted of a rugby ground, a cricket ground used by Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Bowling greens and a running track as well as a pavilion. It was the scene of many great games, including the Challenge Cup finals of 1908 and 1910, several Challenge Cup semi finals, John Player Cup finals and international matches. Although the stands were all demolished, the pitch, floodlights and bankings where the terraces once stood are still there, Huddersfield RLFC played their last game there on 23 August 1992, up until the mid 2000s the club's junior and reserves sides still played on the pitch at Fartown but the stands were already demolished by then. League Leaders Shield
The League Leaders' Shield is a shield awarded to the team finishing the season top of Super League in the sport of rugby league football. Currently, and for most of Super League's history, the championship is decided on the basis of a play-off series with a Grand Final, so the Shield is regarded as a lesser prize. History From 1907 until 1973 the Championship was awarded to the team winning a top-four play-off (excluding the 2 seasons 1962–63 and 1963–64, when the championship was awarded to the top-placed team). The Rugby Football League is the governing body for professional rugby league in England, and until 1995 for the whole British Isles. The name Rugby Football League previously also referred to the main league competition run by the organisation. This has since been supplanted by Super League, the Championship and League 1. Based at Red Hall in Leeds, it administers the England national rugby league team, the Challenge Cup, Super League and the Rugby League Championships. John Smiths Stadium
Kirklees Stadium (currently known due to sponsorship as the John Smith's Stadium) is a multi-use stadium in Huddersfield in West Yorkshire, England. Since 1994, it has been the home ground of football club Huddersfield Town and rugby league side Huddersfield Giants, both of whom moved from Leeds Road. The George Hotel in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England, is a Grade II#England and Wales, Grade II listed building famous as the birthplace of rugby league football in 1895.
