Hubert Jones
Group Captain Hubert Wilson Godfrey Jones Penderel (7 October 1890 – 14 May 1943) was a British World War I flying ace credited with seven aerial victories. Between the wars he had a distinguished career as a Royal Air Force officer, air racer and explorer, and served as group commander in the early stages of World War II, before being killed while making a test flight of a Hurricane. Family background He was born Hubert Wilson Godfrey Jones in Llandeilo, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Jones, and known to his family as Godfrey. His brother, Captain Elton Augustus Harold Penderel of the Tank Corps and Royal Fusiliers resided at Garth, Rhyd-y-fro, Pontardawe. Llandeilo
Llandeilo () is a town and community in Carmarthenshire, Wales, situated at the crossing of the River Towy by the A483 on a 19th-century stone bridge. Its population was 1,795 at the 2011 Census. It is adjacent to the westernmost point of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The town is served by Llandeilo railway station on the Heart of Wales Line. The Silver Medal of Military Valor ( it, Medaglia d'argento al valor militare) is an Italian medal for gallantry. Italian medals for valor were first instituted by Victor Amadeus III of Sardinia on 21 May 1793, with a gold medal, and, below it, a silver medal. These were intended for junior officers or common soldiers who had distinguished themselves in combat. These medals fell into disuse during the period of Napoleonic domination. They were reinstated on 1 April 1815, by Victor Emmanuel I of Sardinia, who, however, abolished them only a few months later, on 4 August 1815, replacing them with the Military Order of Savoy (l'Ordine militare di Savoia), now known as the Military Order of Italy. The Nieuport 17 C.1 (or Nieuport XVII C.1 in contemporary sources) was a French sesquiplane fighter designed and manufactured by the Nieuport company during World War I. An improvement over the Nieuport 11, it was a little larger than earlier Nieuports and better adapted to the more powerful engine than the interim Nieuport 16. Aside from early examples, it had the new Alkan-Hamy synchronization gear, permitting the use of a fuselage-mounted synchronised Vickers gun firing through the propeller disc. At the time of its introduction in March 1916, the type's outstanding manoeuvrability and excellent rate of climb gave it a significant advantage over fighters on both sides and was described as "the best pursuit plane of the day". Lieutenant Maximillian John Jules Gabriel Mare-Montembault Military Cross, MC (4 March 1895 – 1953) was a British World War I flying ace credited with six aerial victories. Military service Mare-Montembault was commissioned from private in the Inns of Court Regiment, Inns of Court Officers' Training Corps to second lieutenant on 25 June 1915, assigned to the North Somerset Yeomanry, Territorial Force. He was later seconded for duty with the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and appointed a flying officer on 3 August 1916. Mare-Montembault was posted to No. 32 Squadron RFC on 10 August 1916, flying the Airco DH.2 single-seat Fighter aircraft, fighter. He gained his first aerial victory on 15 September by sending a Luft-Fahrzeug-Gesellschaft, Roland C reconnaissance aircraft down in flames south of Bapaume.
