The Black House sits on a 250-acre former dairy farmed by the Black family since 1883. The land is part of a group of original land patents named Hobson's Choice, Wise Man's Folly, Additional Defense, Range Declined, Acorn Hill, Ridgley's Great Park, The Dispute, and Dispute Ended. Woodbine, Maryland
Woodbine is an unincorporated rural community in Howard and Carroll counties, Maryland, United States. It is part of the Baltimorean metropolitan area. It is located southeast of Frederick, west of Baltimore, north of Washington, D.C., and east of Mount Airy. The community was named for the woodbine plant, which grew in the community in fields and along riverbanks. Background Woodbine is located at the juncture of the Patapsco River, the B&O Railroad, and the road that runs north from Lisbon to Winfield on Liberty Road ( Maryland Route 26) and through to Westminster, Maryland. The original road from Baltimore to Frederick runs just north of Lisbon, following a slight ridge line westward half way to Woodbine (the road was finally paved in the 1960s). Florence, Maryland
Florence is an unincorporated community in Howard County, Maryland, United States. A post office operated in Florence between June 17, 1868, and March 31, 1906. Governor Edwin Warfield taught in the neighborhood one room schoolhouse. The town was named by Gassaway Watkins Warfield before his death in Camp Chase while serving in the Confederate Army. The town was located at the crossroads of Florence and Jennings Chapel roads. Jennings Chapel was named for Dr. Samuel Kennedy Jennings after the congregation relocated from the Crapster schoolhouse. By 1870, the population increased to 16 and 25 by 1880. Picketts general store for the town was destroyed by fire in 1909. Rouse Company
The Rouse Company, founded by Hunter Moss and James W. Rouse in 1939, was a publicly held shopping mall and community developer from 1956 until 2004, when General Growth Properties (GGP) purchased the company. Beginnings - Moss-Rouse Company The Moss-Rouse Company was founded as a FHA mortgage company with a loan from Hunter Moss's sister. Rouse leveraged his knowledge as loan guarantee specialist at the Federal Housing Administration to establish a Baltimore-based mortgage company specializing in FHA backed loans. Moss-Rouse hired a World War Two Navy friend, Churchill G. Carey from Connecticut General, who in turn provided capital for future projects. Carey would hold positions ranging from president to CEO of the mortgage company subsidiary. In 1952-1953 the company built one of the first modern architecture office buildings on Saratoga Street in Baltimore, while also dropping its commercial lending business line. Clark's Elioak Farm
Clark's Elioak Farm, located along Maryland Route 108 in Howard County, Maryland, is a historic farm covering 540 acres. All of the acreage is part of county or state farmland protection programs, barring use of the property for non-farm development. The Clarks, a family with a tradition of farming in Maryland spanning seven generations, have owned the Elioak farm since 1927. The name, ''Elioak'', refers to a type of silty clay loam common to the slopes and summits of hills in the northern portion of the Piedmont Plateau. Elioak soil is deep, well-drained, and moderately permeable, making it suitable for apple orchards. Elioak was also listed as a former turn of the century Howard County postal village. In recent years, the Elioak Farm has become a petting zoo and the venue for restoration of the former Enchanted Forest.
