Hub McCormick
Herbert Gilmore "Hub" McCormick (August 16, 1878 – 1963) was a college football player and engineer for the military. Early years "Hub" was born on August 16, 1878, in Fairfield, Rockbridge County, Virginia, to James Robert McCormick and Ruth Ann Griener. He received his primary school education at Fairfield, and for his high school education he attended Augusta Military Academy, near Staunton, Virginia, from 1896 to 1898. College athletics McCormick enrolled at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and as a senior was class president. He was selected All-Southern as a tackle on the Virginia Tech Hokies football team in 1901. One source calls him a "holy terror on defensive work." He also played baseball. McCormick later assisted in the construction of Miles Field. Fairfield, Rockbridge County, Virginia
Fairfield is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Rockbridge County, Virginia, United States. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 257. The CDP is in the northeast part of the county, along U.S. Route 11 (North Lee Highway), which leads northeast to Greenville and southwest to Lexington. Interstate 81/ 64 forms the northwest edge of the community, with access from Exit 200 (Sterrett Road). The Interstate highway runs parallel to US 11 and leads northeast to Staunton and southwest to where the highways split near Lexington. Norfolk And Western Railway
The Norfolk and Western Railway , commonly called the N&W, was a US class I railroad, formed by more than 200 railroad mergers between 1838 and 1982. It was headquartered in Roanoke, Virginia, for most of its existence. Its motto was "Precision Transportation"; it had a variety of nicknames, including "King Coal" and "British Railway of America". In 1986, N&W merged with Southern Railway to form today’s Norfolk Southern Railway. The N&W was famous for manufacturing its own steam locomotives, which were built at the Roanoke Shops, as well as its own hopper cars. After 1960, N&W was the last major Class I railroad using steam locomotives; the last remaining Y class 2-8-8-2s would eventually be retired between 1964 and 1965. Miles Field (Virginia Tech)
Miles Field was an outdoor athletics venue of Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia. It was in use from 1894 to 1926, hosting football, baseball, and track events. History University president John McLaren McBryde designated part of an horticulture farm known as Sheib Field for athletic and military drill use in 1894. In 1902, a grandstand was built and the name changed to Gibboney Field. The area was graded and leveled, grandstand enlarged, and then renamed as Miles Field in 1909.
