Huang Guanjun
Huang Guanjun (; 1987 – 22 May 2021) was a Chinese marathon runner; he died in the Gansu ultramarathon disaster. Huang was the champion in the men's hearing-impaired marathon at China's 2019 National Paralympic Games. He died on 22 May 2021, at the age of 34, when high winds and freezing rain struck a long-distance race in Baiyin, Gansu, China. Twenty other runners died in the tragedy. He had impaired hearing after an "injection error" when he was one year old, and also could not speak. Having difficulty finding employment, he had, according to his friends, "joined races over the years in the hopes of winning some prize money". Baiyin
Baiyin () is a prefecture-level city in northeastern Gansu province, People's Republic of China. Established in the 1950s as a base for mining non-ferrous metals, its mines are becoming exhausted in recent decades, requiring the city to reinvent its economy. Gansu
Gansu (, ; alternately romanized as Kansu) is a province in Northwest China. Its capital and largest city is Lanzhou, in the southeast part of the province. Gansu Ultramarathon Disaster
On 22 May 2021, twenty-one professional runners died from hypothermia out of the 172 competing in a government-run 100 kilometer (62 mi) trail running race held in the Yellow River Stone Forest in Jingtai County, Gansu, China. When the cold front struck, rain and possibly graupel were carried by gust reaching level 9 (75–88 km/h; 47–54 mph). The apparent temperature ("body feel") dropped from at 10:00 to from 11:20 to 13:50. Many runners collapsed unconscious from hypothermia while reaching the checkpoint. The organizers were unaware of the scope of the disaster because they did not assign any staff between checkpoints and they did not know the distressed point was in mobile phone signal blind spots. The collapsed runners did not survive and rescuers did not arrive until 19:00. The dead were from the lead pack due to the timing of the cold front, while the slower runners survived. National Paralympic Games
The National Paralympic Games are high-level multi-sport events held at the national level by the International Paralympic Committee and national Paralympic Committees in non-Olympic years. The events provide competitions for disabled athletes. The Games started in 1948. A man by the name of Ludwig Guttmann created the events and competition for World War 2 veterans that had spinal injuries. Liang Jing (; March 1990 – 22 May 2021) was a Chinese ultramarathon runner; he died in the Gansu ultramarathon disaster. Liang won several ultramarathons, including the Ultra Gobi—a race through the Gobi Desert—in 2018. He died on 22 May 2021, at the age of 31, when high winds and freezing rain struck a long-distance race in Baiyin, Gansu, China. Twenty other runners died in the tragedy.
