Carstairs is a town in central Alberta, Canada. It is located on Highway 2A, south of the provincial capital, Edmonton, and north of Calgary, the nearest major city. The closest neighbouring communities are the towns of Didsbury and Crossfield. Carstairs is located entirely within the rural Mountain View County. Named after Carstairs, Scotland, Carstairs began life as a loading platform on the railway connecting Calgary to Edmonton. The first post office opened in 1900. Political career Owens first ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature in the 1955 general election as a Social Credit candidate in the electoral district of Didsbury. He defeated Coalition candidate Ben Brown by a few hundred votes. In the 1959 general election, Owens defeated Progressive Conservative candidate Douglas Munn and a Liberal candidate. Alberta Social Credit was a provincial political party in Alberta, Canada, that was founded on social credit monetary policy put forward by Clifford Hugh Douglas and on conservative Christian social values.
