How Far To Asgaard
''How Far to Asgaard'' is the debut studio album by Faroese folk metal band Týr. It was released in January 2002 by Tutl Records. "Ormurin Langi" is a metal version of the traditional Faroese song. A video for the song was also recorded in Iceland. The song "How Far to Asgaard" is 8:59 in length, followed by 9:50 of silence. At 18:49 there is the Faroese poem "Nornagest Ríma" chanted by a group and accompanied by rhythmic stamping. The Russian release of the album is issued by СД-Максимум (CD-Maximum) under license from Tutl Records. The 9:50 of silence on the track "How Far to Asgaard" is shortened to just 0:51. This version also contains the video for "Hail to the Hammer". The album art on this version is an obvious remake of the original. Týr (band)
Týr () is a Faroese folk metal band. They have been characterised as one of "the islands' two most successful metal bands". Their subject matter revolves almost entirely around Viking lore, mythology, and history, taking their name from Týr, the god of war in Norse religion. In Nordic mythology, Asgard (Old Norse: ''Ásgarðr'' ; "enclosure of the Æsir") is a location associated with the gods. It appears in a multitude of Old Norse sagas and mythological texts. Jens Christian Djurhuus
Jens Christian Djurhuus or Sjóvarbóndin (August 21, 1773 – November 21, 1853) was the first poet who wrote in Faroese. He composed several Faroese ballads in traditional style on historical themes. The best known is ''Ormurin langi''. Djurhuus also composed satirical poems directed against Danish rule in the Faroe Islands. Biography Djurhuus was the fourth son of Johan Christian Djurhuus (1741–1815) and Maria Rønning (1741–1807). They lived in Nes, Eysturoy, where his Danish grandfather Christen Djurhuus (1708–1775) was provost. His mother came from Aust-Agder in Norway. She was reportedly a descendant of Earl Haakon Sigurdsson. In 1797, he married Jóhanna Maria Jensdóttir from Kollafjørður, daughter of farmer Jens Didriksen (1710-1771) of Við Sjógv on Streymoy. Heri Joensen
Heri Joensen (; born 21 February 1973) is a Faroese musician, notable for being the vocalist for the heavy metal band Týr. Heri was born in the Faroe Islands capital of Tórshavn which has had an influence on his song writing. As well as Týr, he has recently recorded a solo album titled ''Heljareyga''. Early life Heri Joensen was born in the Faroese capital Tórshavn on 21 February 1973, but grew up in Toftir, and later his family moved to the small village of Lamba. At the age of fourteen Heri began playing guitar and by the age of seventeen was playing in local bands. By this time he had relocated to the well-populated fishing port of Runavík. Ólavur Riddararós
"Ólavur Riddararós" is a song by Faroese folk / Viking metal band Týr, released as a single in October 2002 by Tutl. The song is an adaptation of the Faroese ballad of the same name, a variant of the ''Elveskud'' ballad. This is the only Týr release to feature Allan Streymoy's vocals, who joined the band after Pól Arni Holm's departure. Ormurin Langi
Ormurin Langi ("The Long Serpent") is a Faroese folk ballad. It was written in ca. 1830 by Jens Christian Djurhuus. Written in 86 verses in Faroese, the song deals with the Norwegian king Olaf Tryggvason. The title ''Ormurin Langi'' refers to Olaf Tryggvason's ship with the same name (Ormrinn Langi in Old Norse). History Around 1800 there was an increasing amount of attention paid to the store of Faroese folk ballads (kvæði), which survived in the oral tradition and were sung as an accompaniment to Faroese dancing. Viking Metal
Viking metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music characterized by a lyrical and thematic focus on Norse mythology, Norse paganism, and the Viking Age.
