Houston Skippers
The Houston Skippers were a minor league ice hockey team based in Houston, Texas. They were a member of the United States Hockey League (1945-51), United States Hockey League, and played for only season, 1946. Houston was awarded a franchise from the USHL on May 12, 1946. The team name was chosen in honor of the "Sea_captain#Skipper, skippers" of the boats in the Houston Ship Channel. The Skippers played their first game on the road on October 26, 1946, and their first home game on November 14, 1946. Their home ice was at the Sam Houston Coliseum. The Skippers finished in last place in the 1946 season. Before the start of the 1947 season, the Skippers changed their name to the Houston Huskies. Minor League
Minor leagues are professional sports leagues which are not regarded as the premier leagues in those sports. Minor league teams tend to play in smaller, less elaborate venues, often competing in smaller cities/markets. Ice Hockey
Ice hockey (or simply hockey) is a team sport played on ice skates, usually on an ice skating rink with lines and markings specific to the sport. It belongs to a family of sports called hockey. United States Hockey League (1945-51)
The United States Hockey League (USHL) is the top junior ice hockey league sanctioned by USA Hockey. The league consists of 16 active teams located in the midwestern United States, for players between the ages of 16 and 21. The USHL is strictly amateur, allowing former players to compete in NCAA college hockey. The Chicago Steel won the Anderson Cup as the 2020–21 regular season champions and the 2021 Clark Cup playoff championship; both were their second in franchise history. Houston Ship Channel
The Houston Ship Channel, in Houston, Texas, is part of the Port of Houston, one of the busiest seaports in the world. The channel is the conduit for ocean-going vessels between Houston-area terminals and the Gulf of Mexico, and it serves an increasing volume of inland barge traffic. Overview The channel is a widened and deepened natural watercourse created by dredging Buffalo Bayou and Galveston Bay. The channel's upstream terminus lies about four miles east of downtown Houston, at the Turning Basin, with its downstream terminus at a gateway to the Gulf of Mexico, between Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula. Sam Houston Coliseum
Sam Houston Coliseum was an indoor arena located in Houston, Texas. Early years Located at 801 Bagby Street in Downtown Houston, the Coliseum and Music Hall complex replaced the Sam Houston Hall, which was a wooden structure that had been erected on the site for the 1928 Democratic National Convention and torn down in 1936. The Public Works Administration contributed $1,329,508 to the project designed by architect Alfred C. Finn. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held on November 4, 1936. The arena opened in November 1937 and had a capacity of 9,200. It was built in conjunction with the Houston Music Hall, which was adjacent to the Coliseum. Houston Huskies
The Houston Huskies were a minor league ice hockey team based in Houston, Texas. Formerly known as the Houston Skippers, they were a member of the United States Hockey League, and were active from 1947 to 1949. They were affiliated with the Buffalo Bisons. The Huskies continued with the same team as the Skippers, and also continued playing in Sam Houston Coliseum. In 1948 former Montreal Canadiens player Toe Blake was named head coach. The Huskies went on to have a great season, eventually winning the 1948 USHL championship. In June 1949 the Huskies were dropped from the USHL. The Huskies, along with teams from Dallas and Fort Worth attempted to form a Texas Hockey League, but were unable to get firm commitments for dates. Because of this, the Sam Houston Coliseum canceled their contract with the team.
