Houston Roughnecks (2024)
The Houston Roughnecks are a professional American football team based in Houston, Texas. The Roughnecks compete in the United Football League (UFL). The team is owned-and-operated by Dwayne Johnson's Alpha Acquico and Fox Corporation. The team was a founding member of the USFL, as the Houston Gamblers in 2022, named after the 1980s USFL team of the same name. Though named after the city of Houston, the 2020s Gamblers never played there under that brand, instead playing its home games as the guest of other USFL teams in Birmingham, Alabama in 2022 and Memphis, Tennessee and 2023. When the USFL and XFL merged to form the UFL in 2024, the Gamblers took over the branding of the original Houston Roughnecks that had played the 2020 and 2023 seasons in the XFL and expressed an intent to play in Houston. 2022 Houston Gamblers Season
The 2022 Houston Gamblers season was the first season for the Houston Gamblers as a professional American football franchise. They played as charter members of the United States Football League, one of eight teams to compete in the league for the 2022 season. The Gamblers technically played as a traveling team (since the entirety of the regular season was played at Protective Stadium and Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama) and were led by head coach Kevin Sumlin. Background and history As is the case with all eight teams competing in the league, the Houston Gamblers take their name and color scheme from a franchise of the same name that competed in the original USFL. The XFL is a professional American football minor league consisting of eight teams located across the United States in mid-sized to major markets served by at least one other major professional sports team. Seasons run from February to April, with each team playing a ten-game regular season, and four progressing to the playoffs to crown a season champion. It is headquartered in Arlington, Texas. The league was founded by former WWE executive Vince McMahon in 2018, as a reboot and successor to the league of the same name he founded in 2001. Brett Derrell Maxie (born January 13, 1962) is an American football coach and former player who is a defensive backs coach of the National Football League (NFL). He was a defensive back for 13 seasons for the NFL's New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, and San Francisco 49ers. Chris Wilson (American Football Coach)
Chris Wilson (born January 8, 1969) is an American football coach who served as the defensive coordinator for the Houston Gamblers of the United States Football League (USFL). Wilson received a Super Bowl ring when he served as a coach for the Philadelphia Eagles, who defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII. Before that, he spent two years with the University of Southern California as the defensive line coach. He has also held collegiate coaching positions with the University of Oklahoma, Indiana State, NE Oklahoma A&M, Illinois State, the University of Colorado, Mississippi State, the University of Georgia, and USC. Lionel Vital (born July 15, 1963) is a former American football running back in the National Football League (NFL) for the Washington Redskins and Buffalo Bills. He was a member of the Calgary Stampeders and Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He also was a scout and director of personnel in the National Football League. Kevin Warren Sumlin (born August 3, 1964) is an American football coach who is the head coach and general manager for the Houston Gamblers of the United States Football League (USFL). Sumlin served as the head football coach at the University of Houston from 2008 to 2011, Texas A&M University from 2012 to 2017, and at the University of Arizona from 2018 to 2020. Early life Sumlin was born in Brewton, Alabama, on August 3, 1964. He later attended Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School in Indianapolis, where he played football, basketball, and ice hockey. Following his prep career, Sumlin attended Purdue University and was a starting linebacker throughout his entire college career.
