Houston Ada Oilers
The Houston Ada Oilers was an amateur basketball club located in Houston, Texas, sponsored and run by the Phillips Petroleum Company. The team was created after the huge success the company's other team, the Phillips 66ers, had achieved in the 1940s and early 1950s. History The first Oilers In 1920, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma the Phillips 66ers (nicknamed as the Oilers) was founded by the company's employees. Boots Adams, future president of the company, helped organize the 66ers and played on the team as well. Featuring players like Bob Kurland, the game’s first 7-foot center, Phillips became a dominant force in its league winning 11 national titles (with 10 second-place finishes) and 11 first-place finishes in the NIBL (including 10 straight between 1948 and 1958). Amateur Athletic Association (basketball)
The Amateur Athletic Association is an amateur basketball league that was created in 1897. It hosts the annual AAU National Tournament. All players participating have to be amateurs. During the 1960s players who left college before the formation of the American Basketball League and American Basketball Association had three options: the National Basketball Association, the Eastern League or AAU basketball. And AAU basketball was attractive to many players who wished to remain eligible for the Olympics. Several AAU teams were sponsored by corporations which provided jobs to the players on their teams. Vickers Petroleum Company was an oil company founded by John A. (Jack) Vickers, Sr. In 1918, Vickers established a refinery in Potwin, Kansas to process the output of recently discovered oil fields in Butler County. Marcus Ross Freiberger ( – June 29, 2005) was an American basketball player from Amarillo, Texas who was a Gold Medalist in the 1952 Summer Olympics. Playing career At 6'11", Freiberger played collegiately for the Oklahoma Sooners. He was a member of the 1952 United States men's Olympic basketball team that won the Gold Medal in Helsinki. Johnny Stanich
John Stanich ( January 18, 1925 - April 1, 2020) is an American retired basketball player. He was an All-American college player at UCLA and represented the United States in the 1950 FIBA World Championship. Stanich graduated from Sacramento High School and attended hometown Sacramento City College. Stanich led the Panthers in scoring in both of his seasons there and as a sophomore in 1945–46 led the Panthers to the junior college national championship. Following his junior college career, Stanich teamed with his younger brother George at UCLA. As a senior in 1947–48, Stanich captained the Bruins squad and was named first team All-Conference and an honorable mention All-American by the Associated Press. Following the close of his college career, Stanich was drafted by the New York Knicks in the 1948 BAA draft.
