Houghton, Washington
Houghton is one of the lakeside neighborhoods of the city of Kirkland, Washington. Consisting mostly of upscale, single-family homes, Houghton overlooks Lake Washington and is one of the wealthier districts of the Eastside suburbs of Seattle. The village was named for Willard Houghton, a local lumberman. Houghton incorporated in 1948. In 1950, Census records showed there were 1,065 people living in the town of Houghton. The city of Houghton was annexed by Kirkland in 1968 and became the first community in Washington with a neighborhood council. The headquarters of the Seattle Seahawks were located in Houghton, near Northwest University until moving to new quarters in Renton in 2008. The main arterials running through Houghton include 108th Avenue NE, west of Interstate 405, Lakeview Drive, and Lake Street, which connects to Lake Washington Boulevard NE. Highway
A highway is any public or private road or other public way on land. It is used for major roads, but also includes other public roads and public tracks. Burlington Northern
The Burlington Northern Railroad was a United States-based railroad company formed from a merger of four major U.S. railroads. Burlington Northern operated between 1970 and 1996. Lake Washington Ferries
Lake Washington steamboats and ferries operated from about 1875 to 1951, transporting passengers, vehicles and freight across Lake Washington, a large lake to the east of Seattle, Washington. Before modern highways and bridges were built, the only means of crossing the lake, other than the traditional canoe or rowboat, was by steamboat, and, later, by ferry. Sand Point Naval Air Station
Naval Station Puget Sound is a former United States Naval station located on Sand Point in Seattle, Washington. Today, the land is occupied by Magnuson Park. History After World War I, a movement was begun to build Naval Air Station Seattle at Sand Point, and King County began acquiring surrounding parcels. In 1922 the U.S. Navy began construction on the site, which it was leasing from the county, and in 1926 the Navy was deeded the field outright. The name ''Carkeek Park'' was subsequently given to a new park on the west side of the city, north of Ballard on Puget Sound. Lake Washington Shipyards
Lake Washington Shipyards was a shipyard in the Pacific Northwest, northwest United States, located in Houghton, Washington (today Kirkland, Washington, Kirkland) on the shore of Lake Washington, east of Seattle. Today, the shipyards are the site of the lakeside Carillon Point business park. The shipyards built many civilian and United States Navy, U.S. Navy ships. History Lake Washington Shipyard was founded in the 19th century as the Anderson Shipyard. This shipyard specialized in the construction of wooden tugs and ferries. In 1923, Anderson Shipyard was bought by Charles Burckardt and renamed Lake Washington Shipyards. The new shipyard converted to steel shipbuilding.
