Hotel Du Lac (film)
''Hotel du Lac'' is a television version of the 1984 Booker prize-winning novel by Anita Brookner. It stars Anna Massey and Denholm Elliott and was released in 1986 as an episode of the BBC's ''Screen Two'' series. It was directed by Giles Foster, produced by Sue Birtwistle with music by Carl Davis and cinematography by Kenneth MacMillan. It aired in the UK on 2 March 1986. Plot synopsis A romance novelist, Edith Hope (who writes under the name Vanessa Wilde) goes to stay at a Swiss Hotel on a lakeside to get away from an ill-fated romance with David, a married auctioneer and having jilted another man on the steps of the wedding venue to the disgust of her friends. At the hotel she writes letters to her ex-lover David, which tell the story of their relationship, but they are never sent. Giles Foster
Giles Foster has been an English television director since 1975, specialising in television dramas. He has also directed in Australia and in Germany (2012-2014). He wrote some television dramas in the 1970s. He is from Bath, Somerset and was educated at Monkton Combe School. TV directed Foster was nominated three times for BAFTA awards for ''Silas Marner'' (1985), ''Talking Heads'' (''A Lady of Letters'') (1987), and won Best Single Drama for his film ''Hotel du Lac'' (1986). He also directed the television series ''Four Seasons'' (2008) which was rewritten to be set in his home town of Bath. Geoffrey Chater
Geoffrey Michael Chater Robinson (23 March 1921 – 16 October 2021) was an English film, television and stage actor. He appeared in the crime drama series ''Callan'', ''Foyle's War'' and '' Midsomer Murders''. Biography Geoffrey Michael Chater Robinson was born in Barnet, Hertfordshire on 23 March 1921 and lived in Iden, East Sussex and London. His father, Lawrence Chater Robinson, was a composer of music for dance bands and his mother Peggy was an actress. It was seeing her perform at London St Martin's Theatre when he was 11 that made him want to follow her onto the stage. Chater was educated at Marlborough College, and joined the Royal Fusiliers in 1940. He served as a captain in India and Burma, where he wrote and performed in revues for the troops during time off. He served in the British Army from 1940–1946. After the Second World War, he focused on his career in the entertainment industry. The British Academy Television Award for Best Single Drama is one of the major categories of the British Academy Television Awards (BAFTAs), the primary awards ceremony of the British television industry. According to the BAFTA website, the category is for "a single, self-contained drama.", this "includes single films which form part of an anthology series, where each episode has a self-contained story. The same characters cannot appear in a later episode." It was awarded as Best Single Play from 1973 to 1983. Prior to that, there was a sole category for Drama Production.
