Horst-Tanu Margraf
Horst-Tanu Margraf (26 October 1903 − 1978) was a German conductor, Generalmusikdirektor of Halle (Saale) from 1950 to 1969. Margraf was music director in Lemberg during World War II. In Halle he was one of the founders of the Handel Festival. He conducted the Staatskapelle Halle in several operas of George Frideric Handel, some in their first modern production, such as ''Rinaldo'' in 1954. He conducted for the festival ''Radamisto'' (1955), ''Poro'' (1956), '' Admetos'' (1958), ''Giulio Cesare'' (1959) and ''Imeneo'' (1960). "Generalmusic director" of Halle (Handel's hometown), he created a wonderful monument to his great compatriot - this is an excellent quality recording of 12 Сoncerti grossi op.6, made in 1960. Handel Festival, Halle
The Handel Festival (in German: Händel-Festspiele) in Halle an der Saale, Saxony-Anhalt, is an international music festival concentrating on the music of George Frideric Handel in the composer's birthplace. Giulio Cesare
''Giulio Cesare in Egitto'' (; , HWV 17), commonly known as ''Giulio Cesare'', is a dramma per musica ('' opera seria'') in three acts composed by George Frideric Handel for the Royal Academy of Music in 1724. The libretto was written by Nicola Francesco Haym who used an earlier libretto by Giacomo Francesco Bussani, which had been set to music by Antonio Sartorio (1676). The opera was a success at its first performances, was frequently revived by Handel in his subsequent opera seasons and is now one of the most often performed Baroque operas. The opera's plot is loosely based on historic events during the Roman Civil War of 49–45 BC. Sylvia Geszty
Sylvia Geszty (born Sylvia Maria Ilona Wytkowsky; ; 28 February 1934 – 13 December 2018) was a Hungarian-German operatic coloratura soprano who appeared internationally, based first at the Staatsoper Berlin in East Berlin and from 1970 at the Staatstheater Stuttgart. She is remembered as Mozart's Queen of the Night and an ideal Zerbinetta in ''Ariadne auf Naxos'', but also performed Baroque opera and in the world premiere of Kurt Schwaen's ''Leonce und Lena''. Geszty was for decades a professor of voice at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart and also taught a master class in Zurich. She made many recordings and appeared on radio and television and in concert and recitals. Hans-Joachim Rotzsch
Hans-Joachim Rotzsch (25 April 1929 – 25 September 2013) was a German choral conductor, conducting the Thomanerchor from 1972 until 1991 as the fifteenth Thomaskantor since Johann Sebastian Bach. He was also a tenor and an academic teacher. Biography Hans-Joachim Rotzsch was born in Leipzig and educated from 1940 to 1945 at the Musisches Gymnasium Frankfurt, directed by Kurt Thomas. In 1949 he began to study church music at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" Leipzig, learning organ with Günther Ramin.Hans-Joachim Rotzsch on the bach-cantatas website Rotzsch became known as an oratorio tenor. Günther Leib
Günther Leib (born 12 April 1927) is a German operatic baritone and professor of voice. A Kammersänger of the Dresden State Opera, he sang leading baritone roles both in his native Germany and internationally during the course of his stage career. In 1971 he was awarded the Robert Schumann Prize of the City of Zwickau and in 2017 on the occasion of his 90th birthday the "Gotha-Medaille" (Gotha Medal), honoring him for his international career as "Gotha's most famous voice". He appears in a number of complete opera and oratorio recordings on the Eterna, Supraphon, and Deutsche Grammophon labels. Life and career Leib was born in Gotha, where he began studying the violin at the age of seven. When World War II ended he continued his studies at the State Conservatory in Erfurt and was engaged as a violinist in the Gotha City Orchestra in 1949. ''Imeneo'' (alternative title: ''Hymen'', HWV 41) is an opera seria in three acts by George Frideric Handel. The Italian-language libretto was adapted from Silvio Stampiglia's ''Imeneo''. Handel had begun composition in September 1738, but did not complete the score until 1740. The opera received its first performance at the Lincoln's Inn Fields in London on 22 November 1740, and received another performance on 13 December. Handel then revised the score, and this revised version received concert performances in Dublin, on 24 and 31 March 1742. Performance history Charles Jennens, who created the libretti for both ''Saul'' and ''Messiah'', described Imeneo as "the worst of all Handel’s Compositions", but added "yet half the Songs are good". ''Poro, re dell'Indie'' ("Porus, King of the Indians", HWV 28) is an opera seria in three acts by George Frideric Handel. The Italian-language libretto was adapted from ''Alessandro nell'Indie'' by Metastasio, and based on Alexander the Great's encounter with Porus in 326 BC. The libretto had already been set to music by Leonardo Vinci in 1729 and was used as the text for more than sixty operas throughout the 18th century.
